Rapaport calls for end to rampant over-grading of diamonds

Martin Rapaport, the chairman of the Rapaport Group, has released a comprehensive editorial titled "Honest Grading" that discloses the over-grading of over 100,000 diamonds, valued at more than a $1 billion. Rapaport calls upon the legitimate jewelry trade to reject those selling over-graded diamonds that fool consumers into believing they are getting better diamonds than they are receiving.

Pawnbrokers cry foul

A newly amended city law in Missoula, Montana, that orders pawnshops to report customer names, driver's license numbers and their physical characteristics to a national online database is prompting outrage among area pawnbrokers who say it treats their clients as criminals. "Imagine Target did this," says Ericka Hughes, who owns Riverside Pawn and also Cash Reserve with her husband Brian. "It seems very unfair."

Norwich, Connecticut, pawnshop owner wants to give away more motorized wheelchairs

The effort began when Phil Pavone got a couple of motorized wheelchairs at A-Z Pawn. He put them up for sale, but no one bought them. So, he decided to give them away and he got sixty responses. He ended up buying two more wheelchairs, gave all four away, and after that, this effort to help others has never stopped.

Hostage situation at Buffalo, New York, pawnshop ends with gunman's suicide

Police say a four-hour standoff that began when a gunman took three hostages inside a Buffalo, New York, pawnshop has ended with the suspect's suicide. Buffalo police spokesman Michael DeGeorge says the gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot. DeGeorge says the man had been described throughout the ordeal as distraught.

Gold bulls accelerate retreat to this year' fastest pace

Hedge funds made their biggest cut of the year in bullish gold wagers as prices tumbled to the lowest since 2010. The net-long position in New York futures and options contracted 36 percent as long holdings fell the most in almost two years, U.S. government data show. Investors sold 22.4 metric tons of bullion held through exchange-traded products last week, trimming assets to the least since August 2009.

Pawnshop database tips off police

Lisa Kay Wiser-Serratore told authorities she was pawning stolen jewelry to finance her prescription drug habit, police said. A stolen iPod, a photograph of an airplane ticket and a girl in Oregon led St. Petersburg, Florida, police to the woman they last month accused of stealing more than 120 pieces of jewelry.

Police in Waco, Texas, looking for pawnshop armed robbery suspects

Waco police Saturday were seeking two men who reportedly used handguns to rob EZ Pawn. Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said victims told police that two armed black men, apparently in their early 20s, with their faces covered with bandanas, forced two employees to lie on the floor and took the manager to the office. They fled on foot with unreported amounts of money and jewelry.
