Forget holiday shopping at the big box stores. Some people are checking off their Christmas lists in pawnshops. These stores promise great deals, lots of variety, and even Christmas layaway. At next year's trade shows, Chatham Created Gems & Diamonds says it will become the latest entity to offer sizable lab-grown white diamonds for sale when it debuts a line of engagement rings set with stones up to a carat in size. CEO Tom Chatham, who spoke with National Jeweler just after returning from China to view the final designs for the line, says the company — which unofficially tacked on "Diamonds" to its name about 10 years ago — is growing white (also referred to as colorless) diamonds using both the chemical vapor deposition and high-pressure, high-temperature processes at undisclosed locations around the globe. Broward Sheriff's Office: Pompano Beach, Fla., pawnshop robbers forced pregnant woman onto floor

The Broward Sheriff's Office says it's searching for two men who robbed a Pompano Beach, Fla., pawnshop at gunpoint. They forced a pregnant woman, a man holding an infant and other customers onto the floor of the Value Pawn, the sheriff's said in a statement. Surveillance video shows customers filing into the shop – followed by a man who pulls out his assault rifle and starts pointing it at people. More

Barrick Gold sees gold prices hitting $2,000 an oz in 2013

Gold prices may hit $2,000 an ounce in 2013 as rising costs and production constraints hold supply in check, while demand from central banks and Chinese consumers keeps climbing, said Barrick Gold Corp, the world's biggest gold producer. Barrick Chief Executive Jamie Sokalsky said supply would struggle to keep pace with rising demand as economic uncertainties and new investment tools in Asia drive more investors to the precious metal, boding well for prices. EZCORP Inc. posted a 14 percent revenue increase and an 18 percent jump in profit for fiscal 2012. The company reported a $143.7 million net income on $992.5 million in revenue during fiscal 2012 compared with a $122.2 million net income on $869.3 million in revenue during the previous fiscal year. Cape Girardeau City Council in Missouri passes 1st reading of pawnshop regulations

Some Cape Girardeau, Mo., pawnshop owners still have a fight for "a level playing field" on their hands. Council members unanimously approved the first reading of a proposed ordinance that would require use of Leads Online, a merchandise tracking system that is run by the Cape Girardeau Police Department, despite the calls of unfairness by local pawnshop owners and their staff for exclusion of jewelry, antique and several other types of resale businesses and services by the city in the now-revised proposal.
