Holiday sales hot at pawnshops
KLTV    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Not all the shoppers lined up in front of malls or department stores over the holiday shopping weekend. Pawnshops have become a popular shopping destination. Golf clubs, to diamonds, saddles to big screen televisions and power tools, all found at bargain prices. "At a pawnshop you get a lot of different items you can find hard to find items for about half the price," says Jeff Mercer, sales manager at Solid Pawn in Longview, Texas. Pawnshops have become today's general store, and holiday shoppers are getting the message. More

Pawnshops are nearly recession-proof businesses. HONOLULU Magazine decided to find out more about the way pawnshops work, and what's behind the counter in Honolulu's best-known outlets. Second-hand stores see image upgrade during downturn
Arizona Daily Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Pawnshops were once the bane of landlords trying to operate respectable shopping centers. The perception was they attracted the seamy underbelly of society: crooks looking to fence stolen goods and drug addicts selling electronics to finance their next fix. "They were kind of a pariah," said Scott Soelter, a senior vice president with Grubb & Ellis. "I don't know if that was a justified perception. I don't know if they were as bad as people perceived them to be." More

"One man's junk is another man's treasure." It's an adage which can be attached to the practice of pawning, which is widely considered the oldest form of the financial institution system. Dating back some 3,000 years, pawn broking has been recorded in ancient China and in written histories of Greek and Roman civilizations. More

'Pawn Queens' used merchandise
Media Life Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
TLC's "Pawn Queens" tries to get us involved in the purchasing decisions of two women who run a pawnshop in Illinois, but since we never see the eventual price that their purchases fetch, there's no payoff. The interaction among the two women and their male partners is pleasant enough, but it would be a lot more involving if the show hadn’t been preceded by so many other reality programs set in pawn or auction businesses. The only new angle in the show is that the business in question is run by women and specializes in products of interest to women.

No force behind scrap metal act
Tulsa World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new state law - the Oklahoma Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 2008 - has no bite and does not force dealers to electronically report suspected stolen metals to the police, said Sgt. Brandon Watkins, head of the Tulsa Police Department's Burglary/Secondary Markets Unit. "We're working on a new city ordinance to make police notification of suspicious copper a requirement, just like the pawnshops - electronically," he said. But the pawnshops don't want the "scrap copper" issue lumped into the Oklahoma Pawnshop Act. More

Now the owner of that store is speaking out and offering a reward to anyone with information that could help get the criminals off the street. Welsh Pawn Shop owner Eric Richman was the first person to get a call after his employees were shot in a recent robbery, "Unbelievably, one of the guys that was shot called me prior to calling - well he hit the panic button, called me and then I actually made the call to 911 - at first I thought it was kidding, but he wasn't." "The name is Lee. Chum Lee." He grinned, aware of his James Bond reference. Actually, his name is Austin Russell. But he's been "Chumlee" since a high school friend tagged him with the name of the walrus sidekick from the 1960s cartoon "Tennessee Tuxedo." And that's what about 5.5 million History Channel viewers know him by as one of the featured real-life characters of Pawn Stars that includes Richard "The Old Man" Harrington, his son, Rick, grandson, Corey, and Chumlee, Corey's grade-school pal.
