Should you get a small business loan from a pawnshop?

It's a legacy of the financial crisis that hasn't quite faded away: Banks are still hesitant to loan to small businesses, constraining the growth of a part of the economy lionized by politicians and the public alike. While these businesses often rely on credit cards to finance operations and expansion, that's a risky strategy, given that they still don't have the legal protections against fees and unannounced changes that were extended to consumer cards in 2009.

Could pawnshops be a good alternative?

Max Pawn in Las Vegas recently moved to a new location about six times bigger, according to owner Michael Mack. "We went from a 450-square-foot sales floor to a 2,800-square-foot sales floor," Mack said.

Albemarle & Bond, the U.K.'s biggest pawnbrokers has issued a strong profits warning as tough conditions leave it melting down its own gold stocks. The company said competition had led to a 12 percent fall in pledges — that is, pawned items it received over the year.

Gold edged up as the dollar fell, but was still headed for its biggest monthly drop in five months on signs that recovery in the U.S. economy could lead to easy central bank money drying up. Smash-and-grab burglars hit pawn shop in Miramar, Fla.

Miramar Police in Florida are searching for at least five smash-and-grab burglars who targeted a pawnshop. Detectives said the suspects broke into Big Daddy's Pawn Shop, just before 3 a.m. by smashing and prying open the front door of the business.
