Standing amid the flat screen TVs, Movado watches and power tools, Diana Aldape is doing a little Christmas shopping. But Aldape isn't at the mall. She's at her neighborhood pawnshop in San Antonio. In a tight economy where consumers have less money in their pockets, pawnshops are seeing more people buying used electronics, musical instruments and jewelry at a discount. More

A pawnshop business has surprised two Tucson, Ariz., non-profit organizations with an unsolicited gift this holiday season. USA Pawn and Jewelry has donated $5,000 each to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson and Youth on Their Own. "We've always considered it a priority to give back to the communities where we do business," says Craig McCall, chief executive of USA Pawn and Jewelry. It's not uncommon for pawnbrokers to accumulate guitars, horns and other music gear pawned or sold by their owners. But one Attleboro, Mass., pawnbroker has chosen to pass on the gift of song to children by donating three boxes full of musical instruments to YMCA music program. Scott Frye, owner of the Attleboro Pawn Shop, delivered guitars, a trumpet and percussion equipment to the Attleboro YMCA where Ed Poirier heads up a program that puts instruments into the hands of children and teenagers. Iowa town will restrict pawnshop, payday loan locations

Clive City Council in Iowa took the first step in restricting the locations where pawnbrokers can set up shop, joining Des Moines and West Des Moines to become the third metro community to address the issue. Under a proposal introduced, the stores — along with payday loan providers — would not be allowed to operate adjacent to residential areas, churches, parks, child-care facilities or schools. The businesses would also be prohibited from opening within 1,000 feet of any adult-oriented business or another pawnshop or delayed-deposit facility. More

Pawnshop owners in Hot Springs, Ark., may have to pony up more information, that's if a new proposed ordinance gets passed in city council. "Reputation is everything in the pawn business. People won't come if they don't feel comfortable being here and we have a good reputation," said Steven Pakis, owner of Pak Plaza Pawn Shop. Pakis said this is a good law as long as everyone complies including cash for gold stores and antique stores that buy from the public.
