Microsoft enlists 'Pawn Stars' to slam Chromebook in latest 'Scroogled' hit

No Google product appears safe from attack by Microsoft's unrelenting Scroogled campaign. Not even Chromebook, a quasi laptop that only really works when it's connected to the Internet. In the latest Scroogled ad, released yesterday, Microsoft sent an actress to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop of "Pawn Stars" fame and filmed her dismay as the shows' stars, Richard "Old Man" Harrison and his son Rick Harrison, ripped the Chromebook to shreds.

Pawnshops for 1 percent turn conspicuous consumption into cash

Last year, Marc Kaye suffered a cash shortage. He had tuition to pay at three colleges — including Harvard and Columbia — and his insurance business wasn't generating enough commissions to cover the bills. Then Kaye remembered a friend in London who had pawned his Patek Philippe watch with a company called Borro Ltd. to cover a similar gap. Unlike traditional pawnshops, filled with guns and personal computers, Borro lends against luxury items. It's the pawnbroker to the 1 percent.

Police: Online database helps solve property crimes

For the last year, the Internet has helped Cape Girardeau, Mo., police reunite crime victims with stolen property ranging from pool cues to power tools. In November 2012, the city adopted an ordinance requiring pawnshops and similar businesses to enter their daily transactions into an online database police can search when items are reported stolen.

Hiram Council in Georgia says 5 pawnshops is enough

"Check into Cash of Georgia," submitted a Special Use Permit (SUP) Application for a title pawnshop to be located in a B-2 (highway business) district of Hiram, Ga. Mayor Pro Tem Derrick Battle made a motion to approve the SUP and the motion was seconded by Councilperson Kathy Bookout, both voting to approve the new pawnshop.

Another strong quarter for Smith & Wesson

Smith & Wesson shares surged 6 percent in after-hours trading Tuesday following another strong quarterly earnings report from the gun maker, which said its handgun sales had grown 27 percent versus a year prior. Gun sales have surged since the reelection of President Barack Obama last year, fueled by concerns about more rigid regulation in the wake of mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo.

Philippine's poor families pawn, sacrifice education during income shocks

When poor households experience income shocks, they resort to pawning and even sacrifice the education of their children, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board. NSCB Secretary-General Jose Ramon Albert said that in 2008, the latest data available, persistently poor households spent a third less than they spent in 2007. He said this could be their coping mechanism amid income shocks.

Houston Police released these surveillance photos in hopes of capturing some pawnshop robbers. Police say three suspects robbed a pawnshop. One suspect held a gun to a woman's head and forced her to open a safe.
