Making a list, and taking it to the pawnshop
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Children in San Mateo, Calif., whispered their wish lists to Santa Claus this weekend at Best Collateral, a pawnshop in a strip mall about 20 miles south of San Francisco. And if their parents didn't mind discounted gifts — well, to be realistic, used or hocked ones — they did their shopping there, too. ... While some customers have always bought Christmas gifts at pawnshops, only recently has the idea gained widespread acceptance, said Emmett Murphy, a spokesman for the National Pawnbrokers Association. So far, this holiday season has been the best one yet, he said. More

Charlotte Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How does a family-owned business in downtown Hickory survive bad economic times? According to Ron and Ronni Berndt, the answer is diversification. Berndt's is celebrating its 65th anniversary this month. Ron Berndt believes its endurance is explained by the family's willingness to evolve. Online pawnshops lend cash fast
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you need a quick cash infusion for your start-up, a pawnshop may be able to help — and for less than you might expect.
