The owner of an Indiana community pawnshop says this time of year he sees an influx of people looking to make the most of their money as they shop for gifts. A German company planned to install the machine at an upscale mall in Boca Raton, a South Florida paradise of palm trees, pink buildings and wealthy retirees. Thomas Geissler, CEO of Ex Oriente Lux and inventor of the Gold To Go machines, says the majority of buyers will be walk-ups enamored by the novelty. Authorities have arrested at 35-year-old woman accused of pawning her own children's Christmas gifts to pay for crack cocaine. Sandra Gyon-Bauers of Belleville, Ill., is accused of stealing her mother's SUV, which contained about $1,000 worth of toys, children's clothing and DVDs — all purchased as Christmas gifts. More

Gold advances in London on demand for alternative to slumping Euro value

Gold rose in London on demand for an alternative investment to the slumping euro. The euro fell against 14 of 16 currencies as the European Central Bank warned of "concerns" about Irish legislation to fix its banking system. Gold assets in exchange-traded products, or ETPs, rose 0.7 percent to a record 2,113.2 metric tons as of Dec. 17, according to data collected by Bloomberg from 10 providers. Gold prices have jumped 26 percent this year as ETP holdings climbed almost 18 percent. More

Rule change would target stolen goods

In an effort to better locate stolen property, Sioux Falls, S.D., law officers say they are working to expand the reach of a city ordinance to include precious metal and gem dealers, licensed second-hand stores and licensed gun dealers. … As the ordinance stands now, pawnshops must hold an item they purchase for 10 days before selling it. Other businesses such as second-hand stores don't have a set amount of time of holding before they can resell. More
