Sophisticated Puyallup, Washington, heist nets burglars $1M in gold

From June 3: In what could have been a scene straight out of a Hollywood movie, police say a group of sophisticated burglars cut holes in several roofs to pull off a million dollar gold heist this weekend in Puyallup, Washington. Police were called to Gold Definitions after employees at the jewelry store realized they'd been cleaned out by thieves.

Thomas Cola loved basketball, had a big smile and came from good parents, his mother testified before District Judge Jessie Walsh. “Was a watch really worth my son’s life?” Engel Cola asked Victor Park, the man who fatally shot Thomas Cola nearly six years ago. “I don’t think so.”

The bartering can get a bit bitter, even with good-natured pawnbroker patriarch Martin Wood behind the glass counter of his namesake pawn shop, Wood’s Loan Office. It is billed as Atlantic City’s No. 1 Pawnbroker. It is unquestionably its oldest. Today, an Asian family is interested in some gold rings. The young woman tries on a couple of the 24-karat baubles, one featuring a tiger face. She likes it well enough, but the older woman doesn’t like the price.

"The brakes went on my car and I didn't have all the money so I had to pawn a lot of stuff," said Andrews.
