Bed Bugs Develop Faster in Groups
A research team from North Carolina State University, led by Dr. Virna L. Saenz, recently published a paper about bed bug development in which they showed accelerated development times for nymphs reared in groups versus those kept alone. Bed bugs prefer to aggregate in clusters of all life stages — eggs, nymphs and adults, when given the choice, and this new research provides strong support for why that may occur. Faster development times for nymphs allows for a higher reproductive capacity and ultimately, greater fitness for the individual and group. Interestingly, the accelerated development times did not require nymphs to be grouped with older bed bugs, the developmental rate was not significantly different when nymphs were grouped with others of the same age. This important work has raised several questions about bed bug development that will surely be explored soon and may yield improvements in bed bug management techniques.

US Senate Passes Legislation Retaining SF's Food Uses
The U.S. Senate today approved legislation retaining the food uses for the fumigant sulfuryl fluoride. The measure is part of the much larger, 950 page plus Farm Bill, which overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week. The Farm Bill now goes to President Obama for his signature. The passage of legislation preserving sulfuryl fluoride's food tolerances is a significant public policy victory for NPMA.
The provision effectively reverses a proposed order revoking or withdrawing sulfuryl fluoride's food tolerances that EPA put forward in January of 2011 under the threat of activist group litigation. The activists claimed that sulfuryl fluoride's tolerances were not permissible because the "risk cup" for sulfuryl fluoride was already filled with fluoride in drinking water and dental care products.
MDACS Adopts Termite Rulemaking
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce recently finalized rulemaking establishing contractual requirements for operators performing exterior perimeter or localized interior termite treatments with certain products. The rulemaking also reduces the time a contract for a termite control system other than a soil barrier treatment must be in effect for from two years to one year. Click here to read the new rule, which goes into effect on March 3.
Why Does EPA Allow DIYers to Use Professional Products?
NPMA staff frequently receive inquiries from PMPs as to why consumers are able to purchase and use pesticide products labeled for professional use only or for individuals/firms licensed or registered by the state. NPMA spent much of the late 1990s and 2000s working with state regulatory officials to persuade the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prohibit the sale of products containing the aforementioned statements to consumers. While a label statement restricting the use of a pesticide product may be enforceable, according to EPA, label language limiting the sale of a general use pesticide to just professionals is not. Under federal pesticide law, EPA does not have the authority to prohibit the sale of an unrestricted or general use pesticide to a consumer.
