Almost 9 million people in the U.K. suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease in which a person's joints become damaged, stop moving freely and become painful. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent musculoskeletal disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide.

Duke scientists have developed working human muscle tissue from stem cells, edging closer to creating more personalized therapies for disease.
The researchers — led by Nenad Bursac, professor of biomedical engineering — converted pluripotent stem cells, which are a class of cells that can be induced into almost any cell type in the body, to muscle tissue using a carefully coordinated chemical system.

Aiming nanosized spears at cells could be an easy and inexpensive way to dispense gene therapy. In an early proof-of-concept study, nanospears — propelled by a magnetic field — successfully hit target cells in a dish and safely transferred their genetic cargo inside.
Gene therapies involve genetically engineering the body’s tissues by inserting DNA into cells. In a dish, such therapies can activate immune cells to fight cancer, or correct genetic disorders like sickle cell disease. However, these treatments are difficult to translate to the clinic and expensive to carry out.
