CLSI Update from NSH Representative, Janet Kliethermes
Janet had the pleasure of attending the 2014 Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute annual leadership conference in Baltimore, Md., this past March and has updated NSH on all new changes. The educational meeting had a new format that allowed attendees to choose from two educational tracks. The morning emergency management session included a first-hand account of managing the laboratory at Staten Island University Hospital during Hurricane Sandy. Stem cell controversy sets back Japanese science

The finding that a lead researcher falsified data in a widely heralded stem cell research paper is a setback for Japan's efforts to promote its advanced research, but also a symptom of the pressure for breakthroughs in the field, experts say. The government-funded Riken Center for Development Biology in Kobe, western Japan said recently it had found malpractice by scientist Haruko Obokata in the work on using a simple lab procedure to grow tissue for treating illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

Possible explanation for human diseases caused by defective ribosomes
Ribosomes are essential for life, generating all of the proteins required for cells to grow. Mutations in some of the proteins that make ribosomes cause disorders characterized by bone marrow failure and anemia early in life, followed by elevated cancer risk in middle age. These disorders are generally called "ribosomopathies." How can ribosomopathies first appear as diseases caused by too few cells, but later turn into diseases caused by too many cells? This paradox has puzzled the scientific community for years. A new study, which uses a genetic approach to examine this paradox, suggests ribosomopathies are caused by a sequence of mistakes at the molecular level.

New urine test accurately predicts recurrence of bladder cancer
A DNA methylation marker test performed on urine samples obtained from patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer has the ability to predict tumor recurrence with both high sensitivity and specificity. The urine test, which measures three distinct DNA methylation markers, detected tumor recurrence with both high sensitivity and specificity (80 percent sensitivity and 97 percent specificity) in NMIBC patients. The research was published online April 1 in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Lab-grown muscle heals itself after animal implantation

Biomedical engineers have grown living skeletal muscle that looks a lot like the real thing. It contracts powerfully and rapidly, integrates into mice quickly, and for the first time, demonstrates the ability to heal itself both inside the laboratory and inside an animal. The study conducted at Duke University tested the bioengineered muscle by literally watching it through a window on the back of living mouse. The novel technique allowed for real-time monitoring of the muscle’s integration and maturation inside a living, walking animal.

Application of nanoproteomics in neuroscience

Advances in proteomics and metabolomics have recently received attention due to their novel applications in biomedicine. We are still in nanoproteomics infancy period, but there is a great potential for its novel applications in biomedicine. Some of the applications of nanotechnology to neuroscience include: molecular imaging, regenerative medicine, drug/gene delivery across blood-brain barrier, nanoscale material for tissue engineering, scaffolds for neural regeneration and carbon nanotube-based bioelectrical interfaces for the nervous system.
