Blood markers promising in Alzheimer's

Blood tests may soon be a realistic screening tool for Alzheimer's disease, with two research groups reporting they had found multi-marker panels that distinguished individuals with the disease from healthy people. In one of the two reports, researchers found that a set of 18 markers in blood had sensitivity and specificity of more than 80 percent for distinguishing patients with Alzheimer's disease from healthy controls. A research project has shed light on the tumor-growth role of a key-signaling pathway in mammary gland stem cells. Tumor stem cells identified in several tumor tissues are functionally similar to mature stem cells, and are capable of creating new tumors. TSCs are thought to originate from either transformed adult stem cells or progenitor cells.
