New test raises hopes in HIV, AIDS fight

A new test to measure the rate of HIV infection in populations is raising hopes among health officials that they'll be able to figure out more quickly and cheaply which methods work best to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. Known as the Limiting Antigen Avidity Enzyme Immunoassay, the test to measure HIV incidence was developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can tell whether a person was infected recently — within the last 141 days — or earlier. More

University oversees cutting-edge trial to fight Lou Gehrig's disease

A clinical trial overseen by the University of Michigan is the only ALS trial so far in which neural stem cells are injected directly into a patient's spinal cord. So far, 15 patients have undergone the procedure — two of them twice — as the FDA monitors its safety. One patient showed a remarkable improvement for a while, though U-M's Dr. Eva Feldman, who heads the research, cautions not to read too much into that. The other 14 showed no improvement. More

Lab-made blood stem cells boost transfusion supply

A team of scientists has developed methods to increase the production of red blood cells from stem cells, a discovery that could dramatically boost the blood supply available for transfusions. MIT designers Ilan Moyer and Nadya Peek have created a briefcase-sized 3-D printer called Popfab that is much more than meets the eye. Like a high-tech Swiss army knife, the printer is also a CNC milling machine, vinyl cutter, and programmable drawing tool. Photoacoustics technique sniffs out cancer cells

One person dies every hour from melanoma skin cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. A technique known as photoacoustics can find some forms of melanoma even if only a few cancerous cells exist, but a recent study found the technique was limited in its ability to identify other types of cancer. Attaching markers, called enhancers, to cancer cells could improve the ability of photoacoustics to find other types of cancer and could save lives thanks to faster diagnoses, but the technique is in its early stages.
