Mine-hunting software helping doctors identify rare cells in human cancer
Bioscience Technology    Share   Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Medical researchers are demonstrating that Office of Naval Research-funded software developed for finding and recognizing undersea mines can help doctors identify and classify cancer-related cells. By adding ONR's active learning software algorithms, the identification of cells is more accurate, researchers said. The enhanced toolkit also requires physicians to label fewer cell samples because the algorithm automatically selects the best set of examples to teach the software. More

Imaging agents offer new view of inflammation, cancer
ScienceDaily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A series of novel imaging agents could make it possible to "see" tumors in their earliest stages, before they turn deadly. The compounds, derived from inhibitors of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 and detectable by positron emission tomography imaging, may have broad applications for cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. COX-2 is an attractive target for molecular imaging. It's not found in most normal tissues, and then it is "turned on" in inflammatory lesions and tumors. More

New membrane lipid measuring technique may help fight disease
ScienceDaily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Could controlling cell-membrane fat play a key role in turning off disease? Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago think so, and a biosensor they've created that measures membrane lipid levels may open up new pathways to disease treatment. Wonhwa Cho, distinguished professor of chemistry, and his coworkers engineered a way to modify proteins to fluoresce and act as sensors for lipid levels. More

Platform developed to investigate how biochemical, physical parameters impact single stem cell's fate
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A hydrogel-based platform for investigating biochemical and physical factors that impact on the fate of single stem cells is reported by investigators. A team from the Laboratory of Stem Cell Bioengineering and Institute of Bioengineering has developed an easily manufactured artificial niche microarray comprising wells that can be functionalized with combinations of proteins spotted by robotic technology in terms of modular stiffness. Researchers engineer new way to inhibit allergic reactions without side effects
R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers from the University of Notre Dame have announced a breakthrough approach to allergy treatment that inhibits food allergies, drug allergies and asthmatic reactions without suppressing a sufferer's entire immunological system. The therapy centers on a special molecule the researchers designed, a heterobivalent ligand, which when introduced into a person's bloodstream can, in essence, out-compete allergens in their race to attach to mast cells, a type of white blood cell that is the source of type-I hypersensitivity. Mercury test is cheaper, faster
Laboratory Equipment    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
University of Utah researcher Ling Zang hopes to address this growing problem of mercury pollution in China and beyond with a new test for detecting the element. The test promises to be faster and cheaper than conventional tests, which require samples to be sent to a laboratory, can take weeks to process and can cost hundreds of dollars. More

3-D interferometric microscopy reveals medical implant wear mechanisms
Laser Focus World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bruker Corp. says that 3-D microscopy based on white-light interferometry can provide high-speed measurement with higher lateral resolution and better vertical measurement accuracy than competing technologies, including 2-D stylus metrology and confocal microscopy. Furthermore, 3-D optical microscopy has a noncontact advantage: stylus systems can induce mechanical filtering due to the contact-tip radius and can also damage the surface under test. More

Identifying subtle cortical gyral abnormalities as a predictor of focal cortical dysplasia
Archives of Neurology    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The objectives of this trial are to highlight a case series of three cases of focal cortical dysplasia that were unrecognized for many years though the patients were seen by various neurologists and received the appropriate neuroimaging studies, and to retrospectively characterize the clinical elements, neuroimaging, electroencephalography and pathologic findings in these cases. Experimental drug shrinks advanced basal cell carcinoma
Internal Medicine News Digital Network    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The experimental oral drug vismodegib provided a "substantial clinical benefit" for patients with locally advanced and metastatic basal cell carcinoma in a phase II trial involving 104 patients. The primary end point of overall response rate by independent review was reached in 43 percent of patients with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma and in 30 percent of those with metastatic disease. Response rates per investigator reached 60 percent and 45.5 percent, respectively. More

Gene expression signatures differentiate adenocarcinoma of lung and breast origin in effusions
SciVerse    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lung and breast adenocarcinoma at advanced stages commonly involve the serosal cavities, giving rise to malignant effusions. The aim of the present study was to compare the global gene expression patterns of metastases from these two malignancies, to expand and improve the diagnostic panel of biomarkers currently available for their differential diagnosis, as well as to define type-specific biological targets. Gene expression profiles of seven breast and four lung adenocarcinoma effusions were analyzed using the HumanRef-8 BeadChip from Illumina. More
