Getting paid for expensive genetic cancer tests is likely to be tougher for clinical laboratories when the patient is covered by a high-deductible health plan. There are two trends that are contributing to this situation, each highlighted by recently published studies. One trend is the rapid growth of consumer-driven health plans. The second trend is growing evidence that patients, if they need to pay much money out of pocket, will decline to undergo genetic testing that is suggested by their physicians. More

Study questions feasibility of entire genome sequencing in minutes

The claim that nanopore technology is on the verge of making DNA analysis so fast and cheap that a person's entire genome could be sequenced in just minutes and at a fraction of the cost of available commercial methods, has resulted in overwhelming academic, industrial and global interest. But a review by Northeastern University physicist Meni Wanunu, published in a special issue on nanopore sequencing in Physics of Life Reviews, questions whether the remaining technical hurdles can be overcome to create a workable, easily produced commercial device. Nina Tandon, Ph.D., dazzled attendees at the TEDx conference this summer by crystallizing years of recent research into an encouraging vision of a new paradigm of medicine she calls Body 3.0. "There is a shift philosophically from the idea of, 'OK let's build a hip,' to, 'Let's build an environment like a fancy fish tank, so to speak' — we call them bioreactors — 'that allow cells to build a piece of bone themselves,'" Tandon said. While simple human tissue has been successfully grown and implanted into patients, researchers will need years to achieve similar successes with more complex tissues, especially the heart and liver.
