Recently released second quarter 2011 U.S. import statistics show continued growth in cotton and man-made fiber apparel imports from Vietnam. Total U.S. imports of Vietnamese-origin apparel in the first half of 2011 totaled $3.1 billion, up 18 percent over the same period in 2010, of which $1.8 billion was of cotton and $1.2 was of man-made fiber. BRS Aerospace, South St. Paul, Minn., has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract with a maximum $9,628,245 for high velocity parachutes. The date of performance completion is Feb. 4, 2012. United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk has announced that the U.S. is taking the next step in a dispute regarding the government of Guatemala's apparent failure to effectively enforce its labor laws by requesting the establishment of an arbitral panel under the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement. The United States requested formal consultations in July 2010 regarding the issues in this case. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis met with officials of the Vietnamese government in Hanoi on Aug. 8 to discuss the U.S.-Vietnamese economic relationship, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and bilateral market access issues. Arriving shortly after the installation of the new government, Marantis was the first foreign official to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Phuc. The two discussed the new government's economic agenda, issues related to the TPP and plans for the next round of negotiations to be held in Chicago in early September, as well as specific concerns related to bilateral goods, agricultural and services trade.
