State officials closed the gray wolf season in those areas on Dec. 10. That came after several wolves collared for scientific research were killed, drawing complaints from wildlife advocates. More

Snyder, 61, who has been hunting since he was 12 years old, headed west on a buffalo hunt at the Broadmouth Canyon Ranch in Utah. He landed a 1,300-pound bison. "We went out in the morning," Snyder said. "Where the buffalo were, we couldn't get to. My guide chased them over the hill. They're not easy to hunt. They can get to places that are pretty rough. We just waited for them to get up to the clearing." The hunt took place on a privately-owned ranch sprawling across 70,000 acres in the Wasach Mountains near Ogden, Utah.
