Obama invokes Newtown, Conn., dead in pressing for new gun laws
The New York Times
President Barack Obama came before a roaring, enthusiastic crowd, in Newtown, Conn., to remember the tragedy of 20 children and six educators slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School and put new pressure on a recalcitrant Congress to honor them with gun-control legislation. In an impassioned speech that at times took on the tone of a campaign rally, Obama told an audience of 3,100 at the University of Hartford that he came to Connecticut to ensure that the deaths in the school in Newtown would not recede and to remind Americans how important their voice is as the gun debates unfold.

Ted Nugent adds 'fever' to Texas deer hunting debate
The Associated Press via The Battle Creek Enquirer
Passions soared. Voices were raised. Somebody even talked about stripping down to a loin cloth. And that was before the crowd heard from Ted Nugent. Standing before the Texas House Committee on Culture, Recreation & Tourism, the rocker best known for 1970s hits such as "Cat Scratch Fever" provided the crescendo to a debate about hunting deer raised in captivity.

Calls for Colorado hunting boycott produce fear of economic losses
The Denver Post
Two words that nobody in Meeker, Colo., wants to hear are "hunting boycott." Hunting is the economic lifeblood in the seat of northwest Colorado's Rio Blanco County, home to the largest elk herd outside of Alaska. So, calls for a Colorado boycott have caught the attention of local merchants and outfitters.

The '40 percent' myth
National Review
Gun control advocates have recently been throwing around an impressive new number. President Barack Obama used it recently, claiming: "as many as 40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check." Vice President Joe Biden and everyone from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal to USA Today repeatedly use it. That "fact" provided the principal support for his first announced gun-control proposal, "universal background checks." But unless you include family inheritances and gifts as "purchases," it is simply false.

Turkey season off and running across Texas
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Attracting a potential mate can be a daunting task. Many things can go wrong and one must be at the top of his or her game. Tom, however, is up for the challenge. Tom is poised and ready with his chest puffed out, walking with a confident stride. He stares deep into his target's eyes. It's an impressive sight. Just 30 yards away, John Arnot is intently focused on Tom's performance. Arnot slowly slides his 12-gauge shotgun out the front of a leafy camouflage ground blind as Tom moves in close to his lady, ready to seal the deal.

Trophies piling up this year
The Clarion Ledger
B. Ellis Solomon of Solomon's Taxidermy in Brandon, Miss., groomed the hair on a whitetail mount and talked about working into the wee hours of the morning making sure everything looks just right. The late hours are nothing unusual for Solomon, but the deer he is seeing this year are. Biologists had predicted that if the weather cooperated, the 2012-2013 season was going to be a banner one for large deer in Mississippi. Many based this opinion, in part, on the previous season's low harvest that was attributed to an uncommonly warm winter. That gave many bucks the chance to move up in age class. Looking at the hundreds of trophy racks in Solomon's business, it appears they were right.

Alan Caruba, an Ammo Land contributor, writes: "The essence of magic is diversion, distracting the audience to watch the right hand while the left is setting up the illusion. It was a lesson never forgotten as we watch politicians divert attention from their actual agenda and right now President Barck Obama is engaged in that as he goes around the nation asking for more gun control."
