In today's business environment, a handbook serves both as a sword to carve out your legal rights, as well as a shield to protect them. A handbook sets expectations, encourages employees to behave in certain ways, helps ensure employees are treated consistently, publicizes employee benefits and helps win unemployment claims and lawsuits. These are just a few of the reasons why every employer, regardless of the number of employees, should have one.
Weak jobs numbers could lead Fed to keep foot on accelerator

To taper or not to taper — that is the question facing the Federal Reserve later this month, especially in light of the weaker than expected jobs numbers. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke seems anxious to start reducing the Fed's assets purchases — the central bank can't keep buying $85 billion in bonds a month forever. Sooner or later, the economy must be able to stand on its own without this unprecedented level of support from the Fed.
US gains 13,100 temp jobs in August

The U.S. added 13,100 temporary help services job in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The year-over-year growth rate held steady compared to previous months.

The Census Bureau reported the U.S. employment services industry had revenue of $63.52 billion in the second quarter. That's up 2.4 percent from the first quarter of 2013 and 2.0 percent from the second quarter of 2012. The estimate is based on seasonally adjusted numbers.

US jobless claims remain near 5-year low
Recently, fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits, a sign that layoffs continue to dwindle in a gradually improving U.S. labor market. Initial jobless claims in the last week of August fell by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 323,000, which was just a tick above a five-and-a-half year low, the Labor Department said.
