    A new year means new hope for small businesses, according to a recent story from The Wall Street Journal. A recent survey by The Wall Street Journal and Vistage International, conducted in December 2014, found that about half of 830 small business owners and executives believe economic conditions will continue to improve in 2015.

    ASTM vote opens door for biodiesel innovation in heating oil

    ASTM International, an organization which sets industry consensus standards for fuels and lubricants, has voted to approve performance specifications for blends of 6 to 20 percent biodiesel with traditional heating oil. The move is a significant leap forward in the industry effort to boost the percentage of cleaner burning biodiesel that homeowners and building managers use in oilheat equipment common to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

    Democrats urge Boehner not to rush Keystone vote
    The Hill
    Three top House Democrats are pressuring Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to allow time for hearings on a bill that would approve the Keystone XL pipeline before sending it to the floor for a vote. Reps. Peter DeFazio, D-Oregon, Frank Pallone, D-New Jersey, and Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona, claim Boehner is moving to schedule a vote on the oil sands pipeline sometime during the first two weeks of the new Congress.

    Region adjusts to heating fuel price fluctuations
    Vermont Standard
    Those who heat their Vermont homes with fuel oil are saving hundreds of dollars this winter season. The average fuel oil price is about 11 percent less per gallon than it was last year at this time. Heating oil averaged about $3.28 in Vermont in November, according to statistics from the Vermont Department of Public Service. Last year, fuel averaged $3.69.

    Pennsylvania officials say need for heating bill assistance likely to increase
    The Sentinel
    More Pennsylvania residents are without heat than at this time last year, and the number of applications for state assistance with heating bills is on the rise, state officials say. A survey found there are about 23,213 households currently without heat-related utility service in Pennsylvania, an increase of about 3,600 from this time last year, the Public Utility Commission said in a Dec. 22 news release. There also were 1,959 customers using unsafe heating sources.
