Obama signs propane, heating oil HOS exemption bill

President Barack Obama has signed into law legislation by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa., that helps provide emergency relief to the ongoing propane and home heating fuel crisis in the United States. "This law provides some assurance that transportation and distribution issues that have contributed to this fuel crisis will no longer be a concern during this cold, lingering winter," Shuster said.

One of the key areas is buildings, where both construction and usage have to be carefully planned and monitored. Energy efficiency is a journey, and we cannot take our foot off the gas pedal, lest we drive into major power wastage. The latest energy efficiency legislation — The Energy Efficiency Improvement Act, H.R. 2126 — that has recently been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives is a significant step forward.

US taps oil reserve in first test release since 1990

The U.S. Department of Energy announced plans on March 12 to release up to 5 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, its first test sale since September, 1990, when world oil prices spiked after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait sparked fear of possible global supply disruptions.

New GSA standards for federal buildings emphasize performance

The U.S. General Services Administration's new standards for its federal buildings focuses more on outcomes, or performance, and less on technology. The Facilities Standards for the Public Buildings Service, also known as the P100, is a mandatory standard that outlines how facilities will be managed, designed and built to achieve higher performance levels and save energy in the 9,200 buildings the GSA owns and leases across the country.

Global pellet market to reach $9 billion by 2020

The global market for pellets is expected to double in the next seven years, growing from a $4 billion market to $9 billion, Michele Rebiere with Viridis Energy Inc. told attendees at the Pellet Supply Chain Summit, March 24. The North American market, is now at 4 million metric tons and forecast to be 5 million metric tons in 2015. But Rebiere thinks that forecast will increase "substantially."
