  • Concerned oilheat members pen letter to president about fuel-switching provision
    Fuel Oil News
PMAA, NEFI and a number of oilheat state associations sent a letter to the Obama Administration highlighting their concerns with language in the Health and Human Services proposed FY 2016 LIHEAP that promotes "fuel switching." As highlighted in the letter, PMAA will be pressing members of Congress and the Obama Administration to work the industry and not against it.

Demand in HVAC market to reach $20.4 billion by 2019
    Contracting Business
Those in the HVAC business have some good days to look forward to, if a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., holds true. The report, run by InvestorIdeas.com, said the demand for HVAC equipment in the U.S. will increase 6.8 percent each year until 2019, where it will reach $20.4 billion. The report notes that this is twice the rate of growth of the 2009-2014 period.

A matter of degrees: How tank temperature affects bacteria growth
    Fuel Oil News
A sharp difference in the temperature of fuel in a large tank and fuel being added to that tank can spell w-a-t-e-r, reported Brian Savage of Savage Associates, a bulk plant system designer based in Martinsville, New Jersey. "If there is a major difference in the temperature between B100 and diesel fuel or heating oil we see a phase separation and a knock-out" — that is, water collecting in the tank, Savage said. "We also see a major increase in bacteria if we don't treat it with bio-oxide," he added.

    UPDATES FROM OESP

A school project with positive results
    OESP
Don't you just appreciate a positive story? Well, here is one that comes from the Westchester Chapter and their adopted school, the Saunders Trades and Technical High School, Bronx, New York.

Annually, they work together on an Oil Heat Cares project. This year, they chose a homeowner in need of a replacement oil tank. Students Jamal Lee, Joshua Espinal, Dominic Justo, Patrick Loane and Christian Velez were instructed to replace a 275-gallon, 26-inch oil tank with a 275-gallon, 42-inch tank. The work was done under the supervision of Lance Marino, from Town & Country, Louis Rocco, who assisted in the removal of the tank, and Robert Daros, from Heritage Fuel and Propane, who also donated the tank.

Students learned in the field while at the same time helping a person in need.

    Assisting one of our own
    OESP
A retired member from the Fairfield County Chapter, Angelo Formato, needs some financial help. And he could also use cheering up with cards. Angelo is a sweet man who could always be counted upon for any Oil Heat Cares projects. All you had to do was ask him.

Angelo now needs us. He has an inoperable form of cancer and his medications are $3,000 out of pocket. He and his wife are struggling to deal with the mounting costs.

At our recent Board Meeting, National donated $500 (the maximum from our Good and Welfare). Chapters also made donations. Plus, we had a 50/50 and raised over $900. Thanks to Ralph Adams for donating it back to Angelo.

If you wish to send a contribution or card to Angelo, please make checks payable Angelo Formato and mail to Al Breda, Sippin Energy, 234 Main St., Monroe, CT 06468-1162. Cards can also be sent to this address.

Standards released for 20 percent biodiesel heating oil
    Domestic Fuel
New standards have been released for up to 20 percent blends of biodiesel in heating oil. The National Biodiesel Board says ASTM International, an organization which sets industry consensus standards for fuels, released new performance specifications for blends of 6-to-20 percent biodiesel, a blend known as Bioheat fuel, with traditional heating oil. The existing No. 1 and No. 2 grades in ASTM D396 already cover 5 percent biodiesel or less.

'Let me rephrase that' — Words and phrases to avoid in HVAC sales
    Contracting Business
A professional sales person earns their income through communication, primarily verbal. There are certain words, terms and phrases that come with a negative slant. What might seem petty and nit picking, truly has an impact with the delivery of a sales presentation whether it be on a first call or final. One or maybe two slip ups is not so bad, but when compounded these words and phrases add together to send a somewhat subliminal negative delivery.

Open data in the oil and gas industry — How far have we come?
    By Lucy Wallwork
The oil and gas industry, more than most, has a reputation for opacity and secrecy — deals made on a handshake behind closed doors, secretive contract negotiations and revenues moving in complicated cross-streams among hundreds of corporate subsidiaries. So where does the oil and gas sector fit into the emerging global momentum toward open data, which is no longer being championed only by techie revolutionaries sitting in co-working spaces in Berlin or London, but at the highest level among government officials?

5 tips for small businesses during tax season
    Forbes
Tax season is upon us and that means for many small business owners the next couple of weeks will be spent going through their records and dredging through receipts to try to cobble together a picture of their company's finances over the last year. While more than 70 percent of small businesses outsource their tax preparation according to the 2015 Small Business Accounting Report, this doesn't mean small business owners don't have work to do.
