US oil supplies reach 82-year high
The U.S. is awash in a glut of crude oil, with inventories at their highest level since the government began keeping monthly data in 1931, according to a report released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). While inventories of oil and distillates (diesel fuel and heating oil) rose, the supply of gasoline actually fell. The total U.S. commercial inventory of crude oil stands at 395.3 million barrels, while total gasoline inventories fell to the middle of the range for the past five years.

Getting green and energy independent: Nice try?
By Stefanie Heerwig
Never have official estimates of fossil fuel subsidies in the United States been so high and never have efforts to cut them so serious. In his proposal for the fiscal year budget 2014, President Barack Obama aims at U.S. energy independence and a radical cut of fossil fuel subsidies. How does this work together or, more importantly, will that work at all?

Looking ahead to Sept. 12-15
We have been hosting our Oil Heat Retreat for the past eight years. We tie it in with our fall board meeting but invite anyone that wishes to simply get away before the winter season sets in. We always try to find a place that gives our members a view of an area that they might not normally visit. That is what makes our country so great. We have wonderful pockets of history and things to do.

This year we are exploring Long Island, N.Y. We will start our weekend with a trip to Brookhaven Labs. Dr. Tom Butcher is setting up a special tour for us and we'll also have some education opportunities set up just for that day. As our event is finalized, we'll have more details to share regarding this.

After our business meeting Saturday, we'll board a bus and go out to Wine Country. For those of you who have never explored the area, you are in for a treat. There are still wonderful farms to see and the wines are quite good. We will have dinner at one of the wineries and even get a chance to see a horse rescue farm. Of course, we'll have plenty of time to socialize.

Make sure you have this date on your calendar!

The program helps needy families pay for portions of their heating bill based on their income from November to April 30. Right now the program estimates that there are over 1 million dollars in unpaid bills that need assistance.

Maine committee eyes moratorium on 'tar sands' oil

A bill creating a two-year moratorium on the transportation of "tar sands" oil in Maine pit environmental groups against those who say the ban would have far-reaching negative effects on the economy during testimony before the Legislature's Environment and Natural Resources Committee. The bill calls for a legislative resolve setting the moratorium while directing the state's Department of Environmental Protection to study the potential impacts of moving oil sands, known by environmentalists as "tar sands," through Maine.

Midwest looks to New England for biomass roadmap

Wood fuel represents just a sliver of the Midwest's heating market. By BTUs, solid biomass supplied 3 percent of the region's heat in 2010. Heating the Midwest is looking to the Northeast as a successful example of where regional coordination and investment is helping to grow a wood-fuel industry. Its vision document was prepared by a Maine biomass research and consulting group, FutureMetrics, that did a similar roadmap for the Northeast in 2010.

Overcoming wiring problems in boiler controls
By Dan Auciello
With all of the new energy-saving boiler controls on the market — most coming packaged on the boiler — there comes another challenge. The typical control wiring to the thermostat on Long Island is 120 volts. It seems to be unique to our service area. Running new wires is not usually practical, and using the existing 14-gauge wire for 24 volts is fine as long as you have the proper amount of conductors.

'Peak oil' is back, but this time it's a peak in demand
Bloomberg Businessweek
Remember peak oil? It's the theory — current about a decade ago—that global oil production would soon top out, leading to an inexorable rise in prices. Reports and books painted a grim picture of the effects this would have on the global economy; as fracking and seabed discoveries have unlocked new sources of the fossil fuel, most have dismissed peak oil as a flawed concept. Now a pair of reports from energy-sector analysts say we're approaching peak oil from the opposite direction: demand.

Survey says: Design/build
Contracting Business
Is the design/build method of mechanical system installation still preferred among contractors? The answer is Yes, although some have found that they must follow alternative methods, such as design/bid or plan and spec. A recent survey of mechanical contractors finds that design/build is generally alive and well. And, although there has been some decline in the number of design/build, projects performed by contractors, a solid majority of those contractors have been able to keep design/build dominant in their regions.
