If Northeast Utilities and UIL Holdings convince Connecticut to support a large build-out of the natural gas infrastructure, heating oil companies could lose a lot of customers. To compensate for the customers switching away from fuel oil, the companies already have moved into other realms of the energy sector and want the General Assembly to open up even more, especially if the state government ends up subsidizing the competing natural gas industry. Online purchasing that enables more timely spot buying is now also helping to reduce risk associated with purchasing for their forward price protection programs, some fuel oil dealers said. "Five years ago or so the market really started to move quicker than you could communicate to the customer," said Ian Cook, vice president of operations for C.E. Kiff, Delhi, N.Y. Maryland has passed legislation that makes geothermal heat pumps an accepted technology available for Renewable Energy Credits under the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard mandate. The move makes Maryland the first state in the country to recognize GHPs as a renewable energy source giving electric utilities credit for the thermal load avoided. More

US government sets stiff tariffs on China solar panels

The Obama administration moved to impose stiff new tariffs on solar panels made in China, finding that Chinese companies are improperly flooding the U.S. market with government-subsidized products. The Commerce Department said Chinese producers had dumped solar cells and panels in the United States at margins ranging from 31 percent to nearly 250 percent. If the preliminary ruling is upheld, tariffs averaging 31 percent could be imposed on Chinese solar-panel imports. More

Solar power gathered in space could be set to provide the renewable energy of the future thanks to innovative research being carried out by engineers at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Researchers at the University have already tested equipment in space that would provide a platform for solar panels to collect the energy and allow it to be transferred back to earth through microwaves or lasers.
