    Colder winters and fuel volumes
    Fuel Oil News
A variety of factors go into determining whether a heating season is good for the industry or not so good. With heating fuel, price tends to have an impact on volume with some people turning down the thermostat as the cost to fill the oil tank moves up. And then you have the weather. The more days that are cold enough to require heating and the colder the weather during those days, the more gallons that are typically consumed. This is conventional wisdom and is certainly true at a foundational level.

    UPDATES FROM OESP

A word from one of our scholarship winners
    OESP
We had three OESP chapters donate scholarships this year — The Garden State, Mid-Atlantic and the Rhode Island Chapter. Each contributed $2,500, and we match that amount. Charlie Bursey with the Rhode Island Chapter, talked with their winner, Roger Bruso. He asked Roger to send him an email once a month just so they would know how he was making out. Well, Roger came through this month with a note to Charlie letting him know how work is going within their family business, located in Massachusetts, and letting him know he is excited about going back to Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport. Roger will be receiving his bachelor's degree next year.

It is terrific giving students support. But it's even better when the student follows up with what has been requested of them. Good luck with your final year, Roger.

    Which middle-skills jobs go unfilled?
    Democrat & Chronicle
Middle-skills jobs make up the largest part of the labor market, both locally and across the United States. By 2017, an estimated 2.5 million new, middle-skill jobs are expected to be added to the workforce nationwide, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all job growth. Too often, employers find themselves unable to fill those jobs because they simply can't find workers with the necessary skills. Across New York State, almost a quarter of the middle-skill jobs go unfilled.

    Warranty or guarantee?
    Fuel Oil News
"I know that many of you have faced the subject of warranties and guarantees, and I wonder if we really recognize their purpose and meaning," writes Charles Bursey, past recipient of OESP's Hugh McKee Award. "Over the years, I have been baffled by this subject, and when I talk to the buyer or the end user, they don't seem to have a true understanding either."

How bootstrapped small business owners can build a brand through PR
    Business 2 Community
Small business owners do not always rely on the internet for new clients. In a vast majority of the cases, these businesses continue to use traditional marketing techniques like fliers and phone directory listings to get the word out. But ask any business owner who has been at least five years in the industry and they will tell you how there is nothing as profitable as "word of mouth" marketing.
