  • Your 10-step technician hiring process
    Contracting Business
It's too late to find, buy or bribe an experienced service technician to come to work for you now. That process should have begun 12 to 18 months ago, and, in fact, should be an on-going, never-ending process. And even if the perfect candidate magically appeared, a problem is probably lurking somewhere. Who lets a skilled, professional service technician get away in the summer? Here is how to implement a successful hiring process for skilled technicians.

Mobile technology drives future of service, customer satisfaction
    Contractor
The not-too-distant future will bring us HVAC and other building components/appliances that talk directly to service providers who can address mechanical issues before they grow into bigger failures. That level of proactivity is near as everything becomes more connected. In the meantime, service providers need to focus on shortening the service cycle and providing the greatest possible customer satisfaction — and mobile technologies help achieve that.

Greenhouse gas initiative costing utilities millions
    EnergyBiz
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative helped boost the economies of its nine participating states between 2012 and 2014, but it also cut revenue by hundreds of millions of dollars at fossil-fuel power-plant operators. Those are among the conclusions of a report that the Boston-based Analysis Group issued July 13 at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners conference in New York.

    UPDATES FROM OESP

It's not too early to think about the Oil Heat Retreat
    OESP
Summer is upon us and we all know what comes next! You can extend the summer and beach fun by joining us at our Fall Oil Heat Retreat, Oct. 1-4, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. There will be education, maybe some golf, relaxation and certainly good food. This event is open to anyone.

We are also going to take the opportunity of providing two days of education. Thursday, we'll offer 45- to 60-minute classes and finish off the day with a light OESP provided hospitality. On Friday, Dave Holdorf will teach the new NORA Gold Hydronics.

Our goal is to introduce more HVAC contractors and plumbers to our association. So Thursday is complimentary, but there is a modest charge for the Friday certification class. You can register for the Oil Heat Retreat by visiting our
    website.

New devices for indoor air quality may provide a catalyst for residential efficiency
    GreenTech Media
Until recently, homeowners had no way to measure their indoor air quality or understand the possible health effects from it. If they can't identify and measure the problem, there's no way to manage it. That is changing with the release of products that monitor air quality. These new devices are also likely to lead to a boost for the residential energy-efficiency market as building performance practitioners are sought out to address the root causes of IAQ problems.

How small business owners can market their businesses
    SurfKY.com
Despite their prevalence, only a handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years.
