  • HVAC game changer: Calculating system BTUs
    Contracting Business
Traditionally the HVAC industry has offered their customer's replacement equipment based on the manufacturer rated BTU and efficiency ratings. If this is still your approach to the marketplace, prepare yourself for a new competitor that that offers an installed system operating efficiency that you may be entirely unprepared to compete against. The amount of BTUs a system delivers into a building can be effectively calculated when system temperatures and airflows have been measured. Let's take a look at the basic steps of HVAC System BTU Measurement.

Energy efficiency: DOE zeroes in on commercial and residential HVAC systems
    Smart Grid News
The Energy Department says non-vapor compression technologies could reduce the energy used in HVAC systems for commercial and residential buildings by 40 percent. And it's kicking in $8 million to support the R&D that will make that possible. They're not talking about a one-size-fits-all technology, either. The intent is to develop what the agency refers to as "regionally appropriate" technologies.

Indoor air quality: Creating sales out of air
    Insurance News Net
For years, HVAC dealers have offered duct cleaning, air filtration, ultraviolet ductwork treatments and a host of wonders that can put mountain-fresh air in our homes. It's about healthy air. Asthma is just one of hundreds of problems linked to indoor air quality. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on their own website that "Indoor air pollution is one of the Top 5 health risks." This makes you uniquely positioned to both build your business and provide a potentially life-saving service.

A reason to be a member — supporting the future
    OESP
Today, politicians and others are talking about good middle-class jobs. OESP doesn't talk about it; we do something about it and have been doing so for many years. We support our chapters and their adopted tech schools with time and money.

Each year we sponsor scholarships and invite our partners (chapters and manufacturers) to join us. Together we have awarded more than $250,000 in awards to students who attend technical and career colleges. In addition, we support high school vocational schools by providing them with needed equipment and inviting them to attend our trade show. We even pay for buses to get them to the show.

Every once in a while, a request comes into National. If we have the budget and it makes sense, we approve it. For example, the New Haven Chapter supports the Vinal Tech School, in Middletown, Connecticut. Late this spring they asked George Perrelli if we would consider supporting their class by helping them attend 2014 Skills USA Competition. We agreed, but we want a follow-up story. Here it is.

Heating oil group's suit says Connecticut unfairly favoring natural gas
    New Haven Register
The lawsuit seeks to block the further implementation of the natural gas portion of the plan, which has already gotten underway. The centerpiece of the plan involves the expansion of natural gas distribution lines in the state in order to allow 300,000 homes in Connecticut to convert to natural gas. Officials with the group representing home heating oil dealers contends that the state's active support of the natural gas expansion is a threat to their members.

    Bioheat in cold weather
    Fuel Oil News
The heating fuel oil season will be in underway. Storing, blending and delivering a high quality product is important. Any breakdown in the system can lead to fuel quality issues, which can impact your reputation up and down the value chain. The first step to ensuring high quality Bioheat fuel oil or a nonblended heating oil is tank management. You can purchase the highest quality fuel oil in the market, but if you store the fuel in a dirty tank or neglect tank management, the potential for fuel contamination will increase.

    Are you being triangulated?
    By Roger Daviston
As leaders, we are extremely vulnerable to being triangulated, and it's unhealthy for the unity of a company. Triangulation is caused by failure to resolve conflict in a direct manner, and it is simply a problem with boundaries. The leader has to put up a fence and not be hooked into rescuing. Conflict is normal, but dealing with it in the wrong way is harmful to the organization.
