Legislation that required heating oil companies in New Hampshire to keep money from prepaid contracts in escrow was endorsed by the Consumer Protection Division of the state Attorney General's Office and the Oil Heat Council of New Hampshire during hearings in 2011. But it died in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. However, Reps. Tim Copeland, R-Stratham, and Donna Schlachman, D-Exeter plan to reintroduce the bill with bipartisan support when the Legislature returns in January. More

Advantages of biodiesel fuel blends for home heating
WHEC-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Biodiesel fuel blends don't necessarily cost more than standard heating oil; they are usually comparable in price. But according to Paul Nazzaro, president of Advanced Fuel Solutions, biodiesel is "exceptionally better. It's virtually sulfur-free; it's a very good lubricity additive. These systems have fuel pumps. It can help extend the life expectancy of the pump." Nazzaro is also a liaison between the petroleum industry and the National Biodiesel Board. More

OESP    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Membership dues have been mailed and checks are coming in. As you explore the benefits, think about the fact that The Advantage provides you with a weekly update on energy news around the U.S. As new technologies are being implemented and explored, you, the heating professional, need to be aware of options. Your customers depend upon you to help them make informed decisions.

And speaking of making buying decisions, our new Home Comfort Specialist Academy will formally launch in 2013. Within the next couple of months we will have a formalized agenda about the program with classes that will begin in the spring. We just might have a few sessions taped at the convention, so it will be easy for you to get into the program. Ralph Adams will also do the first module: Selling a Warm Air Furnace with Air Conditioning again at the convention. This is just one good reason to attend our annual convention to be held May 19-23, 2013, in Hershey, Pa.

If you haven't received your membership invoice, contact Judy Garber.

Helping our neighbors in need
Oilheatingstorm.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
By the time you read this issue of The Advantage, you will have heard of a new website being launched just for those of us that serve the oil heat market. This site, along with Facebook and Twitter, will allow our industry the opportunity to share information so that the hardest-hit markets can go to one location for information about the status of equipment, insurance, etc.

Share this link with your employees and friends. This is one way to donate money to help our neighbors. From this site you will be able to donate money to the Oil Heat Cares Foundation. This foundation was founded by our association and we are proud to say that all the money raised goes to our mission of helping our neighbors in need. There aren’t many charities that can make this claim.

If you happen to be a manufacturer and wish to get on a product list let us know that, too.

We as an industry are taking a proactive approach to this anticipated need, but we’ll need the money to help our neighbors who we know will need the support. And money donated before Dec. 1 will be earmarked for Hurricane Sandy relief. There will be various fundraisers as well, so expect to hear more about what you can do to help our friends and neighbors.

Commentary: Is paying straight commission dangerous?
Contracting Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Techs working on straight commission are not always salesmen masquerading as techs. Techs making serious money on straight commission usually have nowhere else to go to make the kind of money they're making, so they tend stay with the company, which is good. As a result of this, they will defend the company fiercely against anyone whose actions run the risk of getting the company investigated and closed down. More
