Dance, act, sing: Using play-based learning to unlock 'tools of the mind'
Shayna Cook, a Program Associate with New America's Early Education Initiative, writes: "As a District of Columbia Public Schools pre-K teacher from 2010 to 2012, I had the opportunity to teach with Tools of the Mind — a play-based early childhood curriculum. Every morning my students did an activity where they danced in pairs. They radiated with joy as they let their bodies move without the inhibitions and self-awareness that come with adulthood. Some jumped up and down to the music and others twisted and turned. But the majority of them had their eyes on me as they moved around the room with their partner."

Why emotional learning may be as important as the ABCs
Thomas O'Donnell's kindergarten kids are all hopped up to read about Twiggle the anthropomorphic Turtle. "Who can tell me why Twiggle here is sad," O'Donnell asks his class at Matthew Henson Elementary School in Baltimore. "Because he doesn't have no friends," a student pipes up. And how do people look when they're sad? "They look down!" the whole class screams out. Yeah, Twiggle is lonely. But, eventually, he befriends a hedgehog, a duck and a dog. And along the way, he learns how to play, help and share.

The challenge of boys in our early childhood programs

What is bullying?

When we talk about bullying, what do we mean? Unfortunately, the answer is far from clear. Educators are taught one definition, while most state statutes have yet another definition. Worse, surveys are based on a variety of definitions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Department of Education, and Health Resources and Services Administration partnered with bullying experts to develop a uniform definition of bullying.

If children know their colors, shapes, numbers and letters, are they all set to succeed? The reality is there is so much more we must do to set our earliest learners up for success. A child's brain doubles in size in the first year, and by age three has reached 80 percent of its adult volume in size. This development makes the time from conception to age 5 one of the most critical phases in a child's life. With that amount of growth and development, children need much more than just memorization of letters, colors and numbers. We now know that an emphasis on vocabulary and the conversations adults have with children are some the most significant tools we can use to help children achieve during their first years of life.

Requiring flu shots for preschoolers

New York City preschoolers will be heading back to class next week with memories of new holiday toys, vacation adventures, and, health officials hope, a flu shot. In fact, because of a new city requirement, young children can, for the first time in the city's history, be excluded from class if they have not received a flu vaccination. The new rule, which applies to some 150,000 children in city-licensed day care centers and preschools, was quietly adopted by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the waning days of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's administration.

Early education: Fast-growing field, slow-growing pay
Those who care for and educate the nation's youngest learners work in one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's the good news. The bad news is summarized neatly on the dedication page of a recent study on the pay and working conditions of those who teach children 5 years old and younger: "This report is dedicated to the early childhood teachers, of whom we expect so much, but to whom we still provide so little."

Military's preschool program considered a national model
The United States has 2 million military children. They often move from place to place. They live in communities around the country and on military bases all over the world. NPR is reporting on the lives of these children. By many accounts, the military does a good job educating these children, and its preschool system gets high marks. Kavitha Cardoza from member station WAMU in Washington, D.C., reports.

Harassment Training for Managers — fulfills AB1825 Requirement
California law AB 1825 requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide all managers, supervisors, leads, or anyone advising employees with two hours of interactive sexual harassment training every two years.

All supervisory personnel must be trained within six months of their date of hire or promotion, and every two years thereafter. Supervisory personnel have a personal responsibility to keep the workplace free of harassment; failure to do so can lead to a financial fine to the supervisor/manager. Attending this seminar will meet legal requirements and reduce the company's exposure, educate your management and improve your company's work environment.
