Segregation of the nation's children starts with preschool, new report finds
The Washington Post
Publicly funded preschools across the country are largely segregated by race and income, and poor children are typically enrolled in the lowest quality programs, according to a new report by researchers at the National Center for Children and Families at Teachers College, Columbia University. While states more than doubled their investments in preschool between 2003 and 2013, when 1.3 million 3- and 4-year-olds were enrolled at a cost of $5.4 billion, most classrooms were economically segregated, the researchers found.

Their shirts were off and their long, blond hair flew behind them as they ran. There's no mistaking they're brothers. But they have their differences. For instance, 5-year-old Roy spends three hours a day at the new Earl Boyles preschool, which didn't exist when Dude was his age.

Early-education teachers need better training

With the early-education field continuing to grow nationally, it's increasingly clear that the key to good programs is teacher quality. Unlike in K-12 education, however, there aren't standard entry requirements for preschool staff members, and debate continues over how best to build an effective workforce for early education. Some advocate for requiring bachelor's degrees in education, assuming that postsecondary teacher preparation will produce high-quality preschool teachers.

LA Unified is on the brink of cutting a highly-successful preschool program for some of the district's poorest children at the same time that members of the California state assembly are trying to expand early education programs for all low-income pre-Kindergarten students. The district's School Readiness Language Development Program is just one of a handful of programs for district preschoolers, but it is the only one that is entirely financed by general funds with no supplemental contributions from state or federal revenue to help cover the $36 million price tag. That makes it perpetually vulnerable to cuts, especially in lean years, and next year is no different.

Survey: More educators are using social media for fundraising
THE Journal
According to the results of the sixth annual CASE/Huron/mStoner Social Media Survey, more schools, colleges and universities worldwide are using social media to boost their fundraising results, and are experimenting with new strategies. Some 57 percent of respondents reported using social media to fundraise in 2015, compared to 47 percent in 2014. Meanwhile, 59 percent reported experimenting with new social media fundraising strategies.
