918 RSR revealed in Detroit
Returning to the Detroit Auto Show for the first time in four years, Porsche has unveiled a new hybrid race car with the potential for producing 767 horsepower in brief bursts. Based on the 918 Spyder supercar which made its debut at Geneva last March, the new racer trades the open air for a coupe body with doors that pivot upward toward the front of the car. With technology taken from the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, the 918 RSR relies on a kinetic energy recovery system utilizing a flywheel accumulator rotating at up to 36,000 rpm to store energy recovered during hard braking.
