991 GT3 RS 4.0 specifications leaked
PCA
Porsche's internal standard equipment specifications list for the new 991-generation Porsche GT3 RS Euro model have been leaked/revealed on FerrariChat.com (must be registered to view), and the draft PDF document confirms it’s another RS 4.0. The document also states sales of the Euro model start on March 3, 2015.

Though it shares the same 4.0-liter displacement and 500 horsepower as the last RS 4.0, the naturally aspirated flat six is all new. As of now, the spec sheet indicates it will come with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK automatic (no mention of a manual), a new, wide body, and feature lightweight materials and features.

Porsche Panorama February 2015 digital edition available
PCA
In the February 2015 issue, National Policy Chair Bob Gutjahr gives us the Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Not Go To French Lick for Parade 2015 in “Indiana Delight.” Ever wonder about that rusty old 356 that appeared at Werks Reunion 2014 in Monterey? Randy Wells profiles the 1952 pre-A and its owner in “Patina Queen.” The 1968 911L featured in William Edgar’s “Poster Child” was one of a handful of lightweight 911s that were raced in the Trans-Am series, and now it’s driven on the streets of Los Angeles by famed screenwriter and television host Spike Feresten. Former Head of Porsche Motorsport Hartmut Kristen sits down with Kerry Morse to talk about his time there and as its chief in “A Decisive Decade.” In “Forbidden Fruit,” Prescott Kelly explores why many Euro-only Porsche classics from the 1990s are becoming more common in North America, in the process highlighting the 993 Carrera RS and the 993 GT2.

Of course, regular Panorama departments Tech Q&A, European Windows, From the Regions, Street Talk, Art & Canvas, Junior Driver, and zwART are all present and accounted for. Enjoy the issue!

Is bargain Scion FR-S the Porsche 944 reborn?
The Detroit News
Henry Payne of The Detroit News writes, "Oh, it's good to be in my 20s again. Auburn hair. Lightning-quick reflexes. Eyes like a hawk. Or maybe it's just this Scion FR-S I'm driving. Dude, it's dope. Not since my first sports car 25 years ago — Porsche's legendary 944 — has a thrifty thoroughbred felt so good in my hands. 'Affordable sports car,' after all, is usually an oxymoron."

Source: Volkswagen to promote Porsche CEO to management board
Reuters
Volkswagen is set to elevate Matthias Mueller, head of its sports car brand Porsche, to its management board, a source familiar with the matter said Feb. 19. Volkswagen and Porsche declined to comment. German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had earlier reported Mueller's possible promotion, saying in an advance copy of its Friday edition that the agenda for Volkswagen Group's supervisory board meeting showed Mueller was due to be promoted.

Forty mile panoramic views of the countryside, three man-made lakes and a variety of elevation changes have been shaped into 5 sets of tees for golfers of all skill levels. Misprints, mismatches and missed connections in the world of Porsche
By Pablo Deferrari
Three enthusiasts are looking for answers. You see Paul, Fernando and Robert each have a special Porsche with histories that a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche can't seem to verify. In fact, these $100 birth certificates from Stuttgart stirred up more silt from the bottom of an already cloudy pond causing much confusion, disappointment, and above all else, intrigue. They contacted me to help make some sense of things — clearly they must know that these are the sorts of historical validations that keep me up all night neglecting such things as basic personal hygiene and eating. It's what I love doing.

The Porsche Cayman will make you re-evaluate your desire to own a 911
Opposite Lock
Ever since driving a 911 (both a 996 and a 997), I have been fixated on owning one some day. However, used 911s that are quite a few years old are still not as cheap as I'd like them to be and so I found myself becoming more and more interested in the Caymans, many of which can be obtained in the high $20K to low $30K range. They seem to be a perfectly suitable alternative to the 911. Sure, it's not the same as owning a 911 but the Cayman is a car that can be appreciated in its own right.

A jalop's choice: 944 vs Miata (NA/NB)
Project Cars
Mathias Rios writes, "At the ripe age of 19, I feel some sense of pride to be able to say that I have driven and own(ed) two of the most common enthusiast cars in this price range. I am of course, talking about the Porsche 944 and the Mazda Miata MX-5 (NA/NB). I recently sold my Porsche 944, a nice example of an 1987 with under 100k miles, to make way for my Miata that I purchased second-hand from a family member."

Porsche dealers eager to upgrade
Automotive News
When Ray Ciccolo moves his Porsche dealership into a new building in Norwell, Massachusetts, this summer, he expects an extra $1,000 to $1,500 per vehicle in profits and, he hopes, more sales, too. "You get a significant amount of back-end money" per vehicle sold for having a dealership that meets Porsche's design requirements, Ciccolo said. "In order to be competitive with your local Porsche dealer, you simply have to have a brand-new facility so it can be compliant." Ciccolo's suburban Boston store is one of around 150 U.S. Porsche dealerships, out of 189, renovating or expanding as the brand's sales have soared.

Vintage views: Porsche 944
Grassroots Motorsports
Porsche’s air-cooled sports cars are legendary, but in the 1970s the manufacturer saw a future in something unconventional for them at the time: water cooling. The water-cooled, front-engined 924 replaced their entry-level 914 in 1976, but despite good sales, the newer model wasn’t a huge hit with the Porsche faithful. It had nice lines, but it lacked a soul. The 944, released stateside for the 1983 model year, would cure those ills.

There is a class of people out there with so much money they don’t know what to do with it all. They have garages bigger than our houses and keep exotic pets like lions. They’re also the kinds of people who have no problem letting said lion crawl around on a Porsche Carrera GT for kicks.

Video: A canyon run in a $10,000 Porsche 911 (996)
The Sports Car Guys
Currently, the Porsche 911 (996) is a very good value. You can often find early examples for around $20,000 in good condition. But sometimes you can find even better deals. The above pictured 996 cost under $10,000. Yes, you read that correctly. The rear-engined sports car does have 150,000 miles on it but other than a clutch replacement and upgraded Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing (a smart thing to do on any 996 or 986), the maintenance on the car hasn’t been very much.
