PCA to launch redesigned e-Brake News on May 5
PCA
Dear e-Brake News subscriber,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost six years since Porsche Club of America Executive Director Vu Nguyen introduced e-Brake News to PCA members. With nearly 350 issues delivered to subscriber inboxes, it’s been a successful collaboration with MultiView, Inc., the current e-Brake service provider.

For 2015, PCA is looking to take e-Brake to the next level by giving it a redesign and producing it entirely in-house. By doing so PCA will be taking a more active role in filling in the news gaps between issues of Porsche Panorama.

On May 5 when you open e-Brake, you’ll notice that the newsletter shares design cues with Panorama and PCA.org and pays homage to you, the reader: Each edition will start with a featured article. Though e-Brake’s skin will be better-looking, and more importance will be placed on the lead article, initially the newsletter’s format will remain largely the same.

As you scroll down in e-Brake, you’ll find the newsworthy and entertaining PCA and Porsche-related content of the week you expect. Look forward to articles by your favorite e-Brake authors as well as new contributors, and of course we’ll continue to feature the hugely popular member-submitted Porsche of the Week and Month photos.

As e-Brake's editor ushering in a new era, I hope you enjoy the redesigned newsletter, and should you have comments, criticisms, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Damon Lowney

Video: SEP006, the disposable 918 Spyder
PCA
Last November at Tech Tactics West, heavy emphasis was placed on the 918 Spyder, Porsche's 887-horsepower hybrid supercar. There was one up on lifts for PCAers to examine between technical presentations, and Porsche Cars North America Sports Car Project Manager Andrew Lennon gave an in-depth presentation on it. But lurking at the end of a hallway in the room adjacent to the production 918, there was SEP006, a pre-production development prototype that PCNA uses to train dealership technicians on servicing and repairing the hybrid supercar. Despite being a fully functional 918, it is scheduled to be "disposed of" when dealer trainging has ended.

Video: 1989 944 Turbo was "best-balanced high-performance car" ever tested by Motorweek
PCA
Motorweek has posted its Retro Review of what is arguably the best of the 944 range: the 247-horsepower 1989 944 Turbo. Just how good is the last of the turbocharged 944s? Motorweek states: "Porsche 944 Turbo owners will get a car that's much more than just fast. They'll get a machine in which the suspension and brakes have been carefully tailored to its powerful purpose. They'll get a machine in which all the parts are working in concert. They'll get the best-balanced high-performance car we've ever tested."

Porsche 911 Targa road test
U-T San Diego
I was never a fan of the Targa body style of Porsche 911 — until the 2015 model came along. The first generation of 911 Targa was introduced at the Frankfurt auto show in 1965 and this year marks its 50th anniversary. Returning for 2015, this semi-convertible is the seventh generation. You’ll know this body style by its Targa picnic-basket bar (handle) that wraps from just behind the driver door across the roof. It is a style garnish to delineate where the half-roof folds back with one-button ease. It’s more than a sunroof and not quite a cabriolet. But it works quite well for Porsche-fast open driving with little wind disturbance to disrupt conversations. From the driver seat, the experience is the same as driving in a full convertible.

VW investors hope Piech exit may usher in change [w/video]
Reuters
Investors hope that Volkswagen will be able to revive profitability at its core division, cure underperformance overseas and bury lingering plans for acquisitions after the resignation of Chairman Ferdinand Piech. Piech, the mastermind of VW's global expansion and a towering figure at the German group for more than two decades, stepped down on Saturday after losing a showdown he had provoked with Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn.

Taming the Widowmaker: Porsche 935 K3
Petrolicious
This was no public event or track day for this historic Porsche 935 "K3" race car, as it was a booked testing session for teams at the San Martino del Lago circuit, in the rural outskirts of Cremona. Petrolicious was invited to the testing session, and it was a pure spectacle. I never been so close to a 935, and spending the whole day in the company of this legendary Porsche is bucket-list stuff. Despite looking huge and massive in pictures, the car is no bigger than a 930 Turbo. Compared to modern racing cars, the 935 is surprisingly simple: remember this was top class technology 30 years ago!

PCA Club Racing heats up an unseasonably cold Lime Rock Park
PCA
The snow and sleet cleared the area by Friday, but conditions were still not what one would expect for late April at Lime Rock Park. Racers in all classes were fighting for grip and to get tires into operating temperature all weekend. Daniel Yonker flirted with the magic minute milestone in SPB while battling it out with Jason Woz all weekend. Evan Close was found in his usual position, battling for championship points at the pointy end of E stock. Bill Johnson and Roger Halvorsen took home the highly coveted Worker's Choice awards for their efforts in their SP1 944 and GTB1 respectively. Ron Savenor (below) was impressive all weekend taking a GTC3 class victory and podium in the 511 and was at the front of the field throughout the weekend.

The story of me, my husband and his new mistress
By Vicki Floyd
It's finally happened. I always knew it probably would, but I was hopeful we could put it off as long as possible. You see, I have always been the lucky recipient of all my husband Bruce's attention. I was absolutely first in his heart — at the forefront of all his thoughts. It may sound trite, but we have always preferred each other's company to that of anyone else's. We're best friends, have always enjoyed the same things and really had an awesome relationship. In the span of 24 hours, everything changed. She came along — rolling right into his heart with her curvy, little wide body.

Porsche working on variable-compression engine
Gizmag
While the fashion in high-tech automotive developments might lean towards hybrids and electric vehicles at the moment, there’s still plenty of scope to improve the good old internal combustion engine and one of the holy grails of such development is the creation of a viable variable-compression-ratio system. Now Porsche is working on just such an engine, revealed in the form of a newly-published patent, which will be able to alter its compression ratio. It’s partner in the project is engineering firm Hilite International, a leading maker of engine components including variable valve timing cam phasers.

Test drive: Porsche Macan SUV not quite a heartthrob
USA Today
As a colleague aptly said: "It's a $70,000 Porsche and I don't love it." Bingo. Any vehicle wearing a Porsche badge and $72,000-plus sticker price should make you weak in the knees, short of breath, eager beyond description. Macan doesn't. Good machine, but not a heartthrob.

Ultra rare Porsche go-kart could be worth more than a real car
Bold Ride
In 1981, Porsche’s 936 race car took home a thrilling third win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this time with drivers Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell behind the wheel. This is not that car. In fact, this isn’t a car at all. Rather, it’s a half-scale go-kart replica, known as the Porsche 936 Junior, which pays homage to the iconic 936 race car.

Porsche of the Week
PCA
New 2014 Cayman, picked up in Stuttgart in February 2014. The photo was taken in Sedona, Arizona in August 2014. We had a great drive from Colorado Springs and the car performed magnificently. As you may guess from the colors and the tag, I’m a BIG LSU fan.
