New Porsche powers up at vineyard
The Examiner
How does a Tasmanian dealer of rear-engined German sports cars celebrate the national launch of a new model? If his name is Adrian Brown, of the Porsche Centre Tasmania, he invites Tasmanian Porsche drivers to the Josef Chromy Vineyard at Relbia to be part of the experience. And so it was that about 30 Porsches, dating back to the early 1970s, were part of the launch of the new $300,000 Cayman.

Nice Porsche leaves love bite
Stuff
Paul Owen writes, "Named after a crocodile, the Cayman rocks. From the moment I first climbed into Porsche's mid-range sports car back in the 1990s, it felt righteous and superbly capable. Like the open-roofed Boxster, it had the company's trademark boxer-six powerplant shifted to a position ahead of the rear axle for a superior handling balance to the more expensive 911. Like the 911 coupe, it had a permanent roof structure to tie the wheels together with more rigidity than the Boxster."

Behind the scenes: Precious metals
By Cole Scrogham
Gold, silver and bronze are more than just precious metals, they also designate the driver classification structure for the American LeMans Series. To promote competitive driver pairings in the classes considered "Pro-Am," with one professional and one amateur driver, there has to be some means of rating each driver. Criteria such as age, races run, finishing positions and championship history place a driver within each category. For the Dempsey/Del Piero racing team, these classifications played an important role in the April 20 race in Long Beach, Calif.

Porsche 911 Turbo S (993): PH carpool
Piston Heads
Name: John Cameron (johnycarrera)
Car: 993 Turbo S
Owned since: March 2009
Previously owned: 993 Carrera

Why I bought it: "I love all the air-cooled 911s and my dream car was a 993. My previous 993 Carrera was great fun with a few mods and set up properly, but wasn't really quick enough to worry motorbikes. I previously owned a black 993 and had to have another black one. The S was the ultimate for me as I'd never be able to afford a GT2. The S came along in 1997 with larger turbos, stiffer suspension, a strut brace, larger piston brake calipers, an extra oil cooler, fancy air scoops on the rear wings and some carbon bits inside. Standard power was 450bhp over 408bhp of the K16 equipped regular turbo."

Porsche considered F1 before picking Le Mans
Motor Authority
Prior to its confirmation of a return to top-level racing at Le Mans, made in 2011, there was some speculation that Porsche might represent the Volkswagen Group in the world of Formula 1. Porsche, whose reputation is built on the performance of its cars, knew at the time it needed to be in some form of top-level motorsport. While ultimately it chose Le Mans, there was support for an F1 campaign within the ranks.

Drag Race: McLaren MP4-12C vs Porsche 911 Turbo S
Autoevolution
For most people, a Porsche 911 is an overpriced VW Beetle, a car with the engine in the wrong place. Meanwhile, the McLaren is akin to god among humans, a racing car with road tires. Not true. Porsche might have had a bit of trouble with one particular Nissan, but that only strengthened their resolve and allowed engineers to make the more powerful 911 Turbo S. Built for only a short period of thine before the 991 generation came along, this supercar is powered by a B6 engine that is twin-turbocharged to the tune of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds.

GRAND-AM: SpeedSource, Mazda make history at Road Atlanta
Speed-TV
January's Rolex 24 at Daytona certainly came as a baptism by fire for Mazda and its SKYACTIV-based Mazda6 cars. All three factory-backed entries, debuting in the new-for-2013 GX category, didn't make it past the fourth hour of the around-the-clock endurance classic due to engine-related gremlins. While at that time, skeptics may have doubted the immediate future of the program, the Japanese manufacturer in fact pumped in even more support for its new diesel-powered racer. By the third round of the season, Mazda scored its first GX class pole, and just last weekend at Road Atlanta, Joel Miller and Andrew Carbonell took their Visit Florida-backed entry to a historic maiden victory.

Porsche Club of America to visit Traverse City, Mich., for 2013 Porsche Parade - Registration is OPEN
PCA
PCA's showcase event, our annual Parade, will return to Traverse City, Mich., for the first time since 1989. A hidden gem for many, TC — as it's known to locals — is one of America's best-kept secret resorts. Known for its laconic beauty, its high-duned coast along Lake Michigan, and as the tart cherry-capital of America, TC offers a great variety of touring destinations, scenic, well-surfaced roads, beautiful vistas and a sophisticated small-town atmosphere as a home to a vibrant art, literature, and film community. Parade's host, The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, offers an amazing array of amenities, activities and facilities that will make this year's Parade one to remember. The Concours will be on-site, steps away from the hotel and Concours prep area. The two day autocross will be held at nearby Antrim County Airport. The Parade TSD and Gimmick Rallies will cruise through some incredibly beautiful scenery and visit several historically significant sites. And of course the Tech Quiz will have you wishing you'd read just one more book and checked your collections of manuals for the umpteenth time...

Let's not forget all the other great Parade activities for kids and adults that Parade has become known for over the years: the Art Show, the Hospitality Center, the driving and bus tours, the 5K Run/Walk, the RC car autocross and more, more, more! This year's Parade in Traverse City, Mich., is already gearing up to be another one to be talked-about for the ages. For more information, go to parade2013.pca.org Registration for the 2013 Porsche Parade opens on Tuesday, March 12. All registrations entered by midnight Thursday, March 14 will receive equal and highest priority. There will be no paper registration.
