PCA Parade: Of Q-tips and fingernails
By Cole Scrogham
The Porsche Club of America's Parade Concours d'Elegance is something to behold, especially for those who have never seen the spectacle that highlights the national Parade event. For those strolling the grounds and inspecting the 225 or so beautiful Porsches, many have no idea that the beauty began many months and sometimes years in advance. The "Q-tip" crowd, as some call them, have been hard at work for some time, at least for those who have any aspirations to come home with one of those coveted trophies.

Porsche offers restoration comedy in sale
The Advocate via The Times Union
Chris Churchill writes, "Being featured in an Advocate column produced a solution for Kevin Cleary — but not one that he or I expected. Cleary, as you may remember, was the car lover with a problem. He was unable to sell a disabled 1956 Porsche 356A because he couldn't secure proof of ownership or transfer such proof to a buyer."

US Porsche stores pure gold with double Buick's sales
Bloomberg
When a cluster of Minneapolis luxury-car dealerships went up for sale last year, one brand was prized above the Mercedes-Benz and Audi stores. "Porsche was the cherry on the cake," Jay Hulbert, the president of the dealership group that acquired the outlets, said in a telephone interview. "The volume is so dramatically different, yet when you dig into the financial performance, Porsche meets your expectations and then some."

PCA Quest Program — Tell a friend
PCA
I took my wife to see a beautiful used 911 C2 cab in 1994. She said, "This is a beautiful car, but we've two kids to put through college. Shouldn't we wait?" I said, "Okay," without realizing the kids would graduate from Yale and Cornell.

In January 2003, I learned about the PCA Quest program by word of mouth from a PCA member and signed up. From the Porsche Panorama Mart, I sought affordable cars within 250 miles of our home which was then Niskayuna, N.Y. I deposited $500 on a $47,000 car on Long Island, N.Y.

Mrs. Proper shot down that idea as it stretched our budget too far. Two weeks later, I again deposited $500 on a beautiful 1992 C2 cab with 22,621 miles priced in the low $30,000s. After another week, I drove with my wife about 2.5 hours to see this car. She said, "Jim, this looks like a new car." We sealed the deal with a 50 percent deposit.

Later, I paid in full and arranged to take delivery two weeks later upon returning from North Carolina where we sought to retire. She dropped me there in New Rochelle, N.Y., on our trip home to Niskayuna. I drove joyously that day solo up the Taconic State Parkway. It was July 31, 2003, a date etched in my mind.

Stopping at an overlook of the Catskills to the west and Berkshires to the east, I felt the satisfaction of having finally attained my first Porsche. My New York plate was "LUVA 911" until 9/11/01 when the terrorists hit New York City. Since then, in North Carolina, it's been "2KDSLATR."

I believe many who aspire to Porsche ownership will benefit from Quest as have I. However, few PCA members seem aware of the program. Please tell others that they can join the Quest program for six months without owning a Porsche in order to have the advice of the membership in locating the right car. It worked for me.

Respectfully,
James Proper
PCA Carolinas Region Member

Video: The 911's appeal is a German thing
PetroliciousCo via YouTube
Everybody has their "thing." For John Willhoit, it's certainly a German thing. For the past 37 years, he and his custom 1971 Porsche 911T have been Stuttgart's outpost in Los Angeles County. Whether in his shop restoring classic 356s and 911s or on the road thrashing his own rear-engined machine, Wilholt's German thing is a good thing indeed.
