Two examples awaiting Werks Reunion attendees
PCA
1964 911 "The First 911"

After building a small number of pre-production 901 automobiles, chassis #300049, built in October 1964, was the first vehicle officially designated "911" by the Porsche factory and was specifically built for Dr. Ferry Porsche. Special features included unique "black-charcoal" metallic paint, electric sunroof and a leather interior.

Subsequently sold to a German doctor, it eventually found its way to S. Africa, then to the USA and in 1996 was purchased in Michigan by Jerry Seinfeld. Soon after, it was shipped to Porsche AG in Zuffenhausen, where it underwent a nearly two year restoration and then debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours in August of 1998.

1966 356 SC Cabriolet Dutch Police Car

Although 356 production ended in June of 1965, Porsche built a special run of 10 356 SC Cabriolets in June 1966 specifically for the Dutch Police and this vehicle, chassis #162175, is the last of those ten, making it the very last 356 ever built!

After many years of special autobahn usage by the Dutch police force, this automobile was sold to a Dutch citizen and eventually restored in Switzerland in the mid-90's. In 1999 it returned to Holland and subsequently arrived in the USA in 2000 becoming part of the Seinfeld Collection.

2015 Macan: Not a housecat
PCA
Porsche is eyeing the goal posts once again with an exotically named compact SUV, the Macan. It means "tiger" in Indonesian, and it has the performance to back up its name. The all-wheel-drive CSUV is smaller than the Cayenne in almost every dimension, but as Porsche’s least-expensive entry-level model, it must fit into some big shoes.

Mourning a dying friend: The manual transmission
By Jeff Coe
When I purchased my first Porsche, it had a five-speed manual, of course. A true sports car combined with a manual introduced me to another level of enjoyment. All four of my 968s have also been six-speed manuals. In my eyes, a proper sports car should have nothing else. But times have changed, and here we are in 2014. Thanks to technology, the automatic has caught up and surpassed the many advantages of the manual. And that brings me to the reality that I'm facing. My next new car could likely be an automatic, whether I want it or not.

CAR Magazine goes inside the secret Porsche prototype museum
Motor Authority via Yahoo Autos
Porsche maintains a beautiful museum that serves as a celebration of all things produced by the automaker. It's open to the public, costs just a few euros to get in, and is a must-visit for any real fan of the Porsche brand. There is, however, a far more interesting collection of Porsche vehicles that sits just a few blocks away from the museum…and you could walk by it and never know what lies behind its doors.

Convertibles right from the start
Porsche
The first Porsche was a cabriolet: Porsche number 1, the mid-engine roadster designed by Professor Dr. Ing. h.c. Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, had two open-air seats and a rain cover for poor weather. Its convertible top was a canvas piece that just fit, with a simple rod system. It was only used when it rained. Otherwise, Ferry Porsche and his co-workers preferred to drive with the top down from the workshop in Gmünd, Austria, and over their test routes. The turbulent winds that rushed over the two-piece windscreen and into the cockpit were actually pretty tame from today's perspective: number 1 had an engine power of 35 horsepower.

Video: Jeff Zwart's Pikes Peak run with commentary
PCA
Every year, racers from around the globe flock to Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado, including photographer, commercial director, and seven-time Pikes Peak champion Jeff Zwart. Since his record-setting run up the "hill" in 2010 in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, a lot has changed.

Zwart was kind enough to recap this year's race for PCA.org, which goes well with the two videos of his run. Enjoy!

World's most original Porsche 911 RSR destroyed in fire
GTSpirit.com
Earlier this month in Sacramento, California, the facilities of PM Motorsports were destroyed by fire. Thankfully, no one was injured in the blaze, but a selection of classic cars were mortally wounded including what is believed to be the world’s most original Porsche 911 RSR. While the cause of the fire remains unclear, fire crews battled the flames for around four hours but due to the chemicals and tires in the shop, the fire was extremely difficult to control. Over a dozen Porsche models were completely destroyed in the fire with the aforementioned 911 RSR arguably being the biggest lost.

Best safety performance
Consumer Reports via Yahoo Autos
A vehicle with good braking and emergency handling can help you avoid an accident. Typically smaller, sportier vehicles perform well in these tests and larger trucks are slower to maneuver. Consumer Reports crucial emergency driving tests include an avoidance maneuver and a series of at-the-limit cornering assessments around a handling course — a snaking track loop. The avoidance maneuver is a "path-following test" in which the driver pilots the car down a lane marked off by traffic cones with a quick left-right-left sequence. That simulates swerving to avoid an obstacle in the road, then returning to the original lane to avoid oncoming traffic.
