Wide Open: A documentary film on PCA's Drivers Education Program
By Nathan Shriver
There are so many beautiful short films out there from the Porsche racing professional's point of view — pieces from Jeff Zwart and the Drive Channel come to mind — but I couldn't find anything out there that told the story of the aspiring weekend track warrior. We decided to create a documentary film to really shine a light on what PCA "driver's education," or DE, is all about, from the perspective of the amateur, gentleman racer.

James Dean remembered

Gus Vignolle, MotorRacing News,
March, 1955

Warner Bros. film star James Dean purchased his first 356 Porsche, a Super 1500 cc Speedster, in March 1955 and over the next 3 weeks he practiced racing across the 21 miles of Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles for preparation of his first sports car race at Palm Springs on March 26-27, 1955. Practice sure helped as James Dean won his first novice race for sports cars under 1500cc at Palm Springs on Saturday against MGTCs, TDs, TFs, MG Specials and other Porsche 356s. His first place win earned him a qualifying position in Sunday's main event for under 1500cc production cars, competing against veteran drivers like Ken Miles and Cy Yedor in MG Specials; and Dale Johnson and Tracy Bird in other Porsche Speedsters. On Sunday, Dean placed third overall and first in class in the main event with Miles and Yedor ahead of him. Pictured in a rare photo is James Dean at speed in his Porsche Speedster #23F at the Palm Springs Road Races on March 26, 1955. Within six months on September 30, 1955, James Dean was tragically killed in a two-car crash near Cholame, Calif., as he was driving his new Porsche 550 Spyder along with his mechanic, Rolf Wutherich to the Salinas Road Races. Fifty-eight years later...James Dean and the Porsche marque live on!

The photo of James Dean in his Porsche Speedster is owned by forty year PCA Chesapeake Region member and Porsche historian, Lee Raskin, who is also the author of several Porsche publications, including the acclaimed James Dean At Speed photo-narrative.

Video: The Porsche 911 is something special
Petrolicious via YouTube
The name Jeff Zwart resonates with loyal Porsche 911 enthusiasts on a personal level. If you're not familiar with his name, you've certainly been enjoying his work, because Jeff has been one of the key creative minds behind Porsche's advertising campaigns for over 20 years. He has filmed and photographed everything from motorsports to the latest production models, coffee table books, posters, and art pieces.

He began his love affair with the 911 as a teenager learning to drive in his father's early Porsche 901. Today he's known for setting and breaking records racing 911s through the clouds at Pikes Peak. He refers to the 911 as "...a car that ups your game."
