Finding your point of entry to the timeless world of Porsche
By Skip Kuhn
I recently made a couple of observations about the current Porsche business model. The first one was that an entry-level Porsche was best defined as a used Porsche. The second observation was that Porsche has definitely been targeting a broader and less traditional customer base with the introduction of the SUV and sedan product lines. Now, fast-forward a few months to comments by Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. Apparently, I was merely an observer of what Porsche had already decided.

Reminder: Raffle entry deadline Dec. 1
    PCA
Porsche Club of America’s Fall 2014 Member Only Raffle has begun, and there’s excellent reason to purchase at least one $50 ticket: a chance to win a Boxster or Cayman GTS plus $25,000 cash. Click here to register.

Porsche’s mid-engined sports cars are the most recent models to receive GTS badging, earned through higher levels of performance than their S counterparts. A 15-horsepower bump for both cars endows the Boxster GTS with 330 hp and the Cayman GTS with 340, while Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Sport Chrono package, which includes goodies such as dynamic transmission mounts, Sport Plus mode, and launch control, are standard. The sport exhaust system is also standard, and the GTS models maintain the option for a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed PDK automatic.

Video: PCA club racers finish Targa New Zealand third in class
    PCA
Suncoast Florida Region PCA members Gavin and Amy Riches are no strangers to racing and track events armed with a 2011 GT3 Cup. But for the second time in three years, the Riches competed in the Targa New Zealand. This time they finished third in class, fourth in Modern 2WD, and 11th overall.

Throughout the event, Gavin could run with the fastest competition and sometimes beat it. At a couple points, the Riches were in first place overall. But bad luck took out an engine belt during one of the stages, which cost them 20 minutes and was enough to take them out of the running for first place in class and overall. In spite of the belt failure, they finished the Targa on a strong note.

    Start Prepping Now for 60 4 60!
    PCA
For PCA’s 60th Anniversary Porsche Parade Celebration at French Lick, Indiana, we’re planning on having one of the largest historic car displays in the history of Parades. Like the 50th Parade at Hershey, the Parade Concours Committee wants to showcase Porsche’s great race cars and historically significant street machines, but we also want to do something a little different to honor our members and their cars. Our goal for French Lick is, quite simply, 60 for 60. We want to have a member car represent each of the 60 years of the Porsche Parade and the Club’s history — from 1955 through 2015.

60 cars representing 60 years of PCA’s love affair with Porsche. Our selection election criteria will not necessarily based on a car’s appearance or concours points. Not all of the cars will be perfect, but their ties to the Club's history will be inviolate and indisputable. The cars and the owners who display them will represent the legacy of our club, and will be featured on special placards focusing on that particular year in the Club’s history.

So how does YOUR car represent one year in the Club’s history at the 60th Porsche Parade in French Lick at this display? First and foremost, you must be a Parade registrant. Second, the model year of your car must represent its particular calendar year. When the Parade website goes live, you will be able to click on a 60 4 60 link, where you will be asked to fill out a special form specifically for the display. The form will prompt you to tell us about your car and why you believe it should be selected for that particular year. So plan on attending the 60th Porsche Parade, and consider submitting your car for selection into this very special display. We hope your car will be chosen! Stay tuned for more information on this event in the coming weeks.

One dramatic race, and a new world record: Porsche Carrera Cup at Le Mans
    Porsche
An undoubted motorsport highlight of 2014 was the Porsche Carrera Cup race at Le Mans. Organised by Porsche France to celebrate the return of Porsche to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this unique event saw the largest field of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars since the 2011 Carrera World Cup race at the Nürburgring, and with 62 cars set a new record for the most 911 GT3 Cup cars (type-991) in a single race.

This video of 2 Porsches prove that the days of shifting gears are over
    Business Insider
In a recent episode of English car show "Fifth Gear," host Jason Plato tested a pair of brand-new Porsche Cayman sports cars — one with a traditional manual transmission, the other with a semi-automatic PDK gearbox. These days, roughly 90 percent of all cars sold in the US shift gears automatically. The last bastions of the manual transmission are ultra-affordable econoboxes and high performance vehicles. And really, it's the econoboxes that feature the old-school gearshift. Very few true sports cars still have sticks. However, even those may be going away.

Self-driving Porsche not only more fuel-efficient, but faster than humans, too
Green Car Reports via Yahoo News
Self-driving cars are expected to increase road safety, and free up at least some time for their occupants during the morning commute. Machines will never get distracted — eliminating the cause of many crashes — and it appears they have other talents as well. Porsche is testing a semi-autonomous system called InnoDrive that promises to be more efficient than a human driver — and it turns out that it's faster, too.
