The PCIA 2011 Wireless Infrastructure Show has already yielded two acquisition announcements, each linking a Maryland company to a North Carolina company. Network Building & Consulting LLC of Hanover, Maryland is buying IETS Engineering Services of Charlotte, N.C. The new entity will be named "NB&C Engineering Services." Founded in 1984, Network Building & Consulting develops new wireless communication facilities and retrofits existing facilities. Customers include Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Sprint, Comcast, Crown Castle, and American Tower. IETS, founded in 1977, provides architectural and engineering services to the tower and wireless industries. More

The current waves impacting the financial markets have not gone unnoticed by the tower industry, though many in the space seem to think their ship is water tight enough to handle whatever investors can throw at it. Sprint Nextel is able to handle the overwhelming uptick in mobile data traffic and keep providing its smartphones customers with unlimited broadband data service thanks to the company's network management deal with Ericsson. Speaking at the PCIA 2011 Wireless Infrastructure Show in Dallas, Sprint senior vice president of networks, Bob Azzi, told the crowd that the company was better equipped to respond to the network capacity demands of smartphone users and stay ahead of the growth curve because it had infrastructure giant Ericsson managing its network. American Tower Corp., the company that leases wireless communications tower space to customers including AT&T Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp., sold $500 million of debt to finance acquisitions from South America to Africa. The company issued 5.9 percent, 10-year debt to yield 412.5 basis points more than similar-maturity Treasuries, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Proceeds may finance property interests in 1,800 U.S. communications sites, towers under an agreement with Colombia Movil SA and takeovers in the U.S., Latin America and Africa, Boston-based American Tower said in a regulatory filing.
