Report: Most retailers using energy management in over half their stores

Some 63 percent of retailers now have an energy management system in at least 50 percent of their stores, according to a report by retail and multi-site facilities management organization the Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM). The figures come from PRSM's 2012 Benchmarking Report — its first benchmarking report on HVAC costs and best practices for retail and multi-site facilities.

Canadian retail sales bounced back in March after a February setback, growing 0.4 percent as consumers bought more cars and warm weather prompted them to begin their spring shopping for items such as clothing, sporting goods and garden equipment. The increase was a notch above the 0.3 percent gain forecast by market operators and followed a 0.2 percent decline in February, according to recently released statistrics.

Retail companies are more able and willing to reinvest in their businesses, as evidenced by sharp increases in 2012 capital expenditure budgets, according to a new white paper released by Colliers International. The report, "On the Road Again: What's Driving Retail Real Estate's Recovery and Who's Getting There First," finds that technology improvements are focused on improving and integrating all sales channels: brick-and-mortar, online, mobile and catalog operations.

7-Eleven Inc. said that it plans to add 630 new stores in the United States and Canada by year-end. In 2011, the chain added some 600 locations, with the stores either built, acquired or transitioned from another business to the 7-Eleven banner.

Costco Wholesale Corp. posted higher quarterly profit helped by an 8 percent increase in net sales and a lower tax rate, sparking a jump in shares. The largest warehouse club operator earned $386 million, or 88 cents a share, in the fiscal third quarter ended May 6, up from $324 million, or 73 cents a share, a year ago.

Alberta led the country in year-over-year retail sales growth in March, according to Statistics Canada. The federal agency said recently that sales in the province reached $5.6 billion during the month, up 9.0 percent from March 2011. It was also a 0.3 percent increase from the previous month.

Best Buy Co. said that its fiscal first-quarter profit dropped 26 percent on restructuring charges as the struggling electronics retailer began implementing its turnaround plan. Its adjusted earnings and revenue both topped Wall Street's expectations, briefly sending Best Buy shares up 7 percent in premarket trading before turning lower.
