Its report, Mining Market Review, highlights key challenges facing the global mining industry in the year ahead, notes a statement recently issued by Willis Group Holdings. Global economic uncertainty combined with political upheaval has generated a volatile environment in which demand for metals, natural resources and commodities has ebbed and flowed considerably, Willis reports. What's the best way to protect your company when crisis strikes?
Director    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Q: I run a small but fast-growing construction firm in the northeast. I don't have a crisis management strategy in place — up to this point, I have been able to deal with issues directly. But I am fully aware that as headcount increases and the business grows I may need to implement a firmer business continuity plan. How do I put a structure together and what do I need to consider? US job growth fuels optimism about economic recovery
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. job market is proving surprisingly strong and raising hopes that the economy will be resilient enough this year to withstand a budget standoff in Washington and potentially deep cuts in federal spending. Employers added 157,000 jobs last month, and hiring turned out to be healthier than previously thought at the end of 2012 just as the economy faced the threat of the fiscal cliff. The government recently issued the job figures, the same day that other reports showed stronger construction spending, increased factory production and surging auto sales. All are promising trends for 2013. More

Weaker correlations draw investors to emerging markets
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Emerging-market currencies have broken free of the euro's grasp, helping investors see gains on bets that pit these currencies against one another. The recent weakening of the euro's influence as a highly correlated leader of emerging-market currencies indicates growing investor confidence about the euro-zone debt crisis and the broader global growth backdrop. Investors aren't lurching from a state of risk appetite to risk aversion on every headline and so they can start to differentiate between currencies rather than lumping them together in binary groups of "risk currencies" and "safe havens." Crisis management planning should be done by all businesses
AGBeat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Crisis management isn't reserved for idiot celebrities, and it isn't something done as a reaction to a crisis, rather should be treated as seriously as your company's business plan. There are several methods an expert in crisis management planning might utilize to help a company prepare, but there are some basic steps one can take by analyzing each critical component of a business from three perspectives. Don't manage mobile devices, manage the enterprise
GCN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's time to stop talking about mobile device management. Instead, let's start talking about mobile enterprise management. That may seem like a minor wording change, but refocusing an organization's approach to mobile management can have long-lasting effects on the way it deals with an increasingly mobile workforce. Human resources: The 1st defense against insider fraud risk
Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Internal fraud is one of the fastest-growing and most complex criminal threats to any financial organization. Banks and other financial firms deploy ever more sophisticated systems to forestall attack from outside — whether unauthorized transactions, loss of customer data, loss of intellectual property, money laundering or corrupt payments — but all of these may still be vulnerable to an insider, who by definition has some degree of trust from the organization and knowledge of its internal systems and their weaknesses. Internal systems can provide some protection, but defending the bank against this kind of threat is also the job of the human resources department, which has a crucial role to play as gatekeeper and supervisor in the fight against insider fraud.
