A crisis in leadership
By Michael J. Berens
As the global economic slump drags on, pressure builds on heads of state and other leaders to find some means of setting things right. Tough times call for extraordinary leaders. Yet, as one scans the world stage, few — if any — are to be found. Studies by the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project reveal declining faith in leaders in most countries. Political paralysis, sex and corruption scandals, unfulfilled promises, and government-sanctioned spying on private citizens have undermined the public trust.

Risk monitoring a key component of social media strategies
One of the most famous commercials of the 1970s explained to us that, if we told two friends about Faberge Organics shampoo, they would tell two friends and so on and so on. It indicated the power of social interaction, demonstrating on-screen how, after a short while, hundreds and then thousands of people would know about the benefits of wheat germ, oil and honey shampoo. In the era of social media, the adage has changed.

Fleet News

Sluggish global economic recovery ahead
The Washington Times
A robust recovery for the global economy remains well out of reach. That's the view that emerges from a recent survey of economists just as the Federal Reserve is expected to reduce its stimulus for the U.S. economy. Europe has finally emerged from recession. Japan is growing after two decades of stagnation. And the United States is trudging ahead. Yet an Associated Press survey of more than two dozen economists suggests that global growth will remain below full health this year and next.

Managing a successful enterprise risk management program
Ag Professional
Many initiatives within an organization are supported by steering committees, committees that decide on the priorities or order of the business. Generally, a steering committee's purpose is to ensure that the initiative has the support to be effectively integrated into the organization. But, it is not uncommon to see a steering committee that has evolved into an "update session" with little change or influence happening in the organization. enterprise risk management, or ERM, is no different in this regard. It requires an active and engaged committee of sponsors who ultimately own the success of the initiative being adopted by the organization or not.

Catastrophe bonds among top performing assets since Lehman bankruptcy
Five years on from one of the largest financial firm failures ever, the bankruptcy and collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers, many global financial assets have struggled to provide attractive returns as the world’s economies struggled to recover, with some being hit by multiple recessions. The last five years, since the high-profile investment bank failed signaling a new peak in the global recession and the potential for financial contagion, have seen economies beginning to recover (to some degree) and asset class performance growth returning to many markets.
