The Senate passed the first two of 22 House-passed bills to spur job growth, including the VOW to Hire Heroes Act. Using the framework of the House-passed VOW Act, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of
2011 is a bipartisan, bicameral bill to get America's nearly one million unemployed veterans back to work. The bill is expected to be taken up by the House next week.

Speaking aboard the aircraft carrier, the Carl Vinson, on Veterans Day, President Barack Obama gave his weekly address insisting that veterans of conflicts overseas should not struggle to find work once they return home and the House should follow the Senate's lead and do something to help them. He advised the House to pass the the Vow to Hire Heroes Act as soon "as possible so I can sign it into law."

The Army's top officer told the House Armed Services Committee on Nov. 2 that the threatened across-the-board cuts would mean personnel reductions in the National Guard and Reserve, in addition to the 50,000 cuts already planned for the active Army. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno was responding to a
question from committee vice chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, who asked, "If $465 billion is OK, then why not $466 billion or another $50 billion?"

In an address at the National Guard's Joint Senior Leaders Convention, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta spoke about how the relationship between the active duty and the reserve components has fundamentally changed in the past 10 years. As the Guard and reserve are "increasingly indistinguishable from the active component," Panetta asserted that all active and reserve
personnel of all services have worked together closely for a decade. That experience of "fighting alongside each other" has built trust and respect across the force.

This Veterans Day, like the nine that preceded it, does not come at a time of peace. We are no longer saying thank you to veterans of wars only two times a year. Now we are thanking our children, our friends from high school and our younger cousins. Every day, someone new is introduced to the hardships of wartime military service or the horrors of combat.

This week the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard announced an increase in activated reservists, while the Army announced a decrease. The net collective result is 144 fewer reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease.
