Will 2013 be the year of turnaround for the solar supply chain?
Solar Industry magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After a disastrous third quarter of 2012, which was characterized by extremely low factory utilization rates across the entire photovoltaic supply chain, the industry saw a surge in demand for PV modules in the final quarter of the year. A new PV module shipment record of 11 GW was reached, according to the IHS Solar Integrated Market Tracker from information and analytics provider IHS. But despite this positive sign, the situation of the global PV industry remains critical, and a substantial recovery of the supply-demand balance is not expected to occur before the second half of this year. Army's largest solar array dedicated in New Mexico
The Associated Press via ABC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Army dedicated its largest solar energy-producing system at White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico. The $16.8 million array includes nearly 15,500 sun-tracking solar panels spread across 42 acres. It will be capable of producing 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year — enough to meet about 10 percent of the need of the missile range. More

Solar costs to fall as REITs emerge as source of funding
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A San Francisco startup may win approval as soon as this month to become the first firm allowed to raise money for solar-power projects as a REIT, the financing vehicle used in $640 billion of U.S. property ventures. Renewable Energy Trust Capital Inc., led by a former Moody's Investors Service chief executive officer, has asked tax officials at the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to classify solar farms as the type of "real property" that may be included in real estate investment trusts, or REITs. A ruling is imminent, according to Kelly Kogan, an attorney with Chadbourne & Parke LLP, which advises financiers on REITs. More

Ken Salazar's legacy includes push for wind, solar energy
Politico    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Ken Salazar came into office as Interior secretary, no large-scale solar projects had been approved, and the offshore Cape Wind project near the Massachusetts coast had been stalled for years. Since then, Salazar has overseen the first major push to permit renewable energy development on public lands, with Interior giving green lights to dozens of solar, wind, geothermal and transmission projects. Chinese solar market boomed in Q4, accounting for third of global demand
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
China, vilified in the U.S. and Europe for dumping cheap solar panels on the global market, has itself become a major buyer of photovoltaic modules and accounted for a third of worldwide demand in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a report released. That's up from less than 10 percent of global demand just two years ago. More

Commentary: Obama's inauguration points to good climate for solar
PV-Tech    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to blogger Felicity Carus, President Barack Obama's inauguration speech on Jan. 21 was remarkable for many things. However, he selected the strongest language on climate change and the need for sustainable sources of energy he's ever used as president, invoking passion and conviction perhaps not even seen in his 2008 campaign days. Since 2004, Austin Energy provides solar photovoltaic rebates to residents who install panels and meet other requirements. Austin Energy spokesman Carlos Cordova said the company is looking to help customers ease into this alternative energy source. More

Black silicon can lead to more efficient solar cells, new breakthrough shows
CleanTechnica    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A significant breakthrough has been made in the light absorption and surface passivation abilities of silicon nanostructures — such as black silicon — by researchers at Aalto University in Finland. The improvements were made by the application of an atomic layer coating, which works to improve light absorption and to make it more resistant to impurities. More

Failing costs make sunny skies for US solar industry
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
