Experts: UK Should Have 10 Million Homes With Solar Panels by 2020
The Guardian
Ten million homes in the U.K. should have their roofs covered with solar panels in the next six years, if the country is to fulfil its renewable energy potential, energy experts said. That number — of more than a third of households generating energy from the sun — would allow the U.K. to produce about 6 percent of its annual electricity needs from solar power, with as much as 40 percent coming from the panels on sunny days in summer, by 2020.

Patent Map Reveals Rise of Thin-Film Solar Technology
Forbes
A photovoltaic cell consists of two or more layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When the material is exposed to light, electrical charges are generated and conducted away by metal contacts as direct current. The electrical output from a single cell is small, so multiple cells are connected together and encapsulated (usually behind glass) to form a module or panel.

The push is being led by companies such as Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. and Shunfeng Photovoltaic International Ltd. Combined, China's top five panel producers are planning at least 4.6 gigawatts of projects this year, enough to power 5 million homes in the nation and almost quadruple the capacity completed last year.
