US solar market poised for growth

With five of the most tumultuous months in solar history behind it, the United States market is poised for major growth. That was the message Shayle Kann, managing director of the solar division of GTM Research, shared with several hundred solar industry representatives in his opening remarks at the Solar Power Generation USA conference in Las Vegas. The U.S. has installed about 5 to 7 percent of the world's solar every year since 2005, Kann said. More




Top 10 fastest-growing solar cities in California announced by SunRun, PV Solar Report

San Jose, Bakersfield and Simi Valley rounded out the top three fastest-growing solar cities in California based on a report released by SunRun and PV Solar Report. The top ten California cities all demonstrated that they had added more home solar systems in 2011 than other California cities. Lancaster, Fresno, Corona, Murrieta, Rocklin, Hemet and Apple Valley completed the top ten list. More

Solarhybrid and Solar Millennium finalize takeover deal

Following months of negotiations, Germany's Solarhybrid AG has acquired Solar Millennium AG's U.S. photovoltaic pipeline. Under the deal, Solarhybrid has taken over project holding companies Solar Millennium Capital GmbH and SM USA 2 GmbH. In addition to receiving the aforementioned project pipeline, Solarhybrid now also holds a 70 percent stake in Solar Trust of America LLC. "All intercompany loans and other receivables from Solar Millennium AG to its U.S. subsidiaries were also acquired," said Solarhybrid in a recent statement. More

DOE approved 7 solar power projects in 2011

The Department of Energy approved a total of seven solar power projects toward the end of 2011, according to records of the department. DOE records showed that the seven projects have a total generating capacity of 190.08 megawatts. As of Dec. 16, the DOE approved the projects of Energy Logics Philippines, Youil Renewable Energy, Enfinity Philippines Renewable Resources Inc. and PhilNewEnergy Inc. More

Solar startups set new power records

If solar startups Alta Devices and Semprius were in the server business, one would be developing a deluxe high-powered server while the other would be stringing thousands of Linux boxes together. Both approaches, though, are showing promise at bringing the cost of solar power down. Alta Devices said it set the record for the most efficient solar cell, able to convert 23.5 percent of sunlight into electricity. The University of California at Berkeley spinout said the efficiency mark, verified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is a step toward commercializing its novel solar technology. More
