Obama's budget would extend treasury grants for wind, solar

President Barack Obama's proposed budget would renew and extend a subsidy for renewable energy projects that helps pay for as much as 30 percent of development costs, according to a solar lobbying group. The 2013 budget would restore U.S. Treasury Department grants that expired in December, a benefit that may add as many as 37,000 solar jobs, Rhone Resch, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association, said in a recent statement. IKEA now plans to bring rooftop solar power to 85 percent of its stores and distribution centers in the United States. Darden Restaurants Inc. is dedicating a new array of solar panels that is so large it creates a canopy over the four-story parking garage at the company's headquarters in south Orange County, Fla. It is, essentially, a utility-scale power plant, rated at 1.1 million watts. It also counts as a new point on the timeline of alternative energy in Florida. More

Bakersfield saluted as one of California's top solar cities

Pacific Gas and Electric Company saluted Bakersfield, Calif., for becoming one of the state's top solar cities. PG&E also recognized its customer, First Congregational Church, UCC, whose solar installation was instrumental in Bakersfield's ranking. The finding, recently announced in an Environment California report, rated Bakersfield sixth in the state in solar generation with 16 megawatts. More

But the rapid expansion of solar power projects is quickly making a name for the city as the first solar-financed town in America. A solar power building boom is happening in the community, located about 25 miles south of Las Vegas. This boom will soon generate enough revenue to eliminate Boulder City's municipal debt and stabilize its financial needs for years to come, according to Mayor Roger Tobler. More

Vote Solar releases survey findings on solar energy in California

Vote Solar, a nonprofit solar advocacy group, in partnership with Probolsky Research, announced the findings of a recent survey to assess the attitudes toward solar energy development in California's Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. According to a release, results indicate that a decisive majority of citizens in California's desert communities strongly support the development of solar power facilities in their counties. More

Although President Barack Obama's Jan. 24 State of the Union address contained only a singular mention of solar energy, he reiterated his commitment to expanding clean energy project development in the U.S. and ending subsidies to fossil-fuel companies. "We've subsidized oil companies for a century," Obama said. "That's long enough. It's time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that rarely has been more profitable and double down on a clean energy industry that never has been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits." No specific details on these tax credits were provided. More

Solar tower will power Las Vegas at night

SolarReserve has completed the central point of a solar project that uses molten salt storage to deliver power to the grid well after the sun has gone down. The startup company said it has completed the 540-foot tower of the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project near Tonopah, Nev., which is expected to start delivering 110 megawatts by the end of 2013. When it comes online, it's projected to have 10 hours of storage, the longest full-load storage capacity for a solar plant. More

Kadlec Regional Medical Center gets energy efficient with solar panels, wind turbines

The Tri-Cities' infamous "400 days of sunshine" now are helping power Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Wash., with the recent installation of an array of solar panels on the hospital's roof. The solar panels, along with two miniature wind turbines, were part of a multi-million dollar energy efficiency project Apollo Solutions Group pitched to the hospital to help Kadlec save money on its energy bills. If solar startups Alta Devices and Semprius were in the server business, one would be developing a deluxe high-powered server while the other would be stringing thousands of Linux boxes together. Both approaches, though, are showing promise at bringing the cost of solar power down. Alta Devices said it set the record for the most efficient solar cell, able to convert 23.5 percent of sunlight into electricity. The University of California at Berkeley spinout said the efficiency mark, verified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is a step toward commercializing its novel solar technology. More
