Georgia's Solar Industry Adds Jobs as PSC Calls for More Solar Energy

Georgia has climbed to 16th place in the nation in 2013 for the number of workers in the solar industry, according to a new report by The Solar Foundation. Georgia has added some 1,800 solar jobs since 2012, bringing the total number of jobs in Georgia's solar industry to about 2,600, the report found.

Study: Solar Jobs Grow 225 Percent in Georgia

A report from The Solar Foundation finds more than 2,600 Georgians are now working in the solar power industry and that Georgia had the highest rate of growth — 225 percent — in the nation between September 2012 and November 2013, jumping from 23rd to 17th place overall in national rankings for solar jobs.

SunEdison to Keep Solar Projects as it Eyes Long-Term Profits

SunEdison Inc. said it would stick to its strategy of keeping solar power projects rather than selling them in 2014, sacrificing revenue in favor of long-term profit. The U.S. solar company's shares recently rose as much as 7 percent in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange. SunEdison's strategy of keeping projects instead of selling them led to a larger loss in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31.

Solar energy electronic and plastic material advances

A variety of films and plastic coatings have been developed to allow more flexible and mobile power systems to be built. Most solar cells are commonly designed to operate outdoors for 25-plus years, and these barrier layers protect against oxygen and water and are highly resistant to damaging ultraviolet light. Key components for both crystalline silicon and thin-film modules include glass, pastes/screens, junction boxes and cables, encapsulants, frames, backsheets, frontsheets, adhesives, ribbons and thin-film feedstock. Now, plastics are finding other photovoltaic applications beyond sheets and films.

Ohio: Take Steps to Fuel Growth of Solar Market

The National Solar Foundation released its latest Solar Jobs Census, with some exciting news for Ohio. The state was ranked as one of the top 10 states for solar jobs in 2013. According to the report, Ohio was ranked eighth in the nation with 3,800 solar jobs, more than 900 of those added just last year. These jobs include manufacturing, installation and project development.

Rwanda to Build East Africa's Largest Solar Plant
The New Times via AllAfrica
Rwanda has started the construction of a new 8.5-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant, the first utility-scale solar power field in East Africa. The plant will be built on land belonging to Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village. The PV plant will become East Africa's first utility-scale solar installation and, once complete, will generate 8 percent of Rwanda's electricity.
