SEIA: US solar projects rose 67 percent in Q4

Installation of solar panels in the U.S. surged as much as 67 percent in the fourth quarter as developers raced to qualify for an expiring federal incentive program while panel prices fell 16 percent, a trade group said. Developers installed 700 megawatts to 750 megawatts of rooftop and ground-mounted systems in the quarter, compared with 450 megawatts in the third quarter, according to preliminary estimates from the Washington-based Solar Energy Industries Association. Sometime in May visitors to Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, may witness students jumping out of a wind turbine and rapidly coming down a rope more than 400 feet to the ground. The emergency controlled descent training will be part of the graduation for students enrolled in the college's two-year solar and wind turbine energy training program. Thirty-nine students are enrolled, with college officials receiving almost weekly inquiries from potential employers. More

Feds identify land in Arizona for renewable energy projects

The Bureau of Land Management has recommended 237,100 acres of public land in Arizona are suitable for renewable energy development, part of an effort to speed up the process for clean energy companies looking to set up shop in the state. The agency released a draft environmental impact statement for its Restoration Design Energy Project, recommending a middle course among six alternatives that ranged in size from 43,700 acres to 321,500 acres. Minnesota Power raises solar incentives

The electric utility serving northeastern and central Minnesota has added new incentives for customers who install solar-electric power arrays, including a made-in-Minnesota bonus. Minnesota Power said that its updated SolarSense program will rebate $1,000 per kilowatt to customers installing solar-electric technology manufactured in Minnesota. That's atop the existing base rebate of $2,000 per kilowatt. A kilowatt is 1,000 watts. More

Apple plans 20 megawatts of solar power for iDataCenter

Apple has revealed new details about the operations of its huge data center in Maiden, N.C., including plans to build a 20-megawatt solar power facility to support its operations. Apple also plans to use a fuel cell powered by biogas that could generate up to five megawatts of power. The Apple facility would be the largest solar array dedicated to data center operations, surpassing a 14 megawatt array being built to support the McGraw-Hill data center in East Windsor, N.J. Apple disclosed its renewable energy ambitions in Maiden in the company's latest environmental report. More

Fast food restaurants are now tapping into solar power to save money on their super-sized energy bills. A Taco Bell now under construction in Moreno Valley, Calif., will be the first in the restaurant's chain to be all solar-powered, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reports. A 200-foot long roof is being constructed over its entire drive-through line and will be covered with 155 solar panels, possibly the first of its kind, owner Grover Moss told the newspaper. More
